Support effort to battle drug abuse

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

Every September, members of the recovery community pause to celebrate Recovery Month.

While we often hear the stories of tragedies associated with addiction and substance abuse, we are less apt to hear about those who have been able to achieve and sustain recovery. The journey that individuals who are addicted to substances face is often full of challenges, at times setbacks and frequently pain.

With that said, recovery is possible.

Each day, each new skill and each opportunity for success makes long-term recovery possible.

We are fortunate to live in a community where there are organizations devised to support those seeking recovery.

One of the most important factors in recovery is developing connections. By engaging in treatment and recovery support groups, and renewing healthy relationships, those who are living with addiction may be able to feel hope and see that they are worth the effort it takes to fight for their own lives.

In Jay County, there are support groups for those with an addiction as well as for those who love someone with an addiction.

The key to long-term recovery is not a one-size-fits-all approach but instead, a multitude of options to support those faced with addiction from treatment, support groups and natural supports.

As a community we can make a difference by learning, supporting and stopping the stigma associated with addiction.

We have come to know that addiction can affect anyone, from any walk of life. It does not discriminate based on race, religion or socioeconomic status.

In an effort to be part of the solution, Jay County Drug Prevention Coalition has worked to build partnerships and provide supports. We would like to invite everyone to engage in being part of the change, reducing the stigma and becoming part of the solution.

The Jay County Drug Prevention Coalition meets the third Monday of each month at 3:30 p.m. at the John Jay Center for Learning. We welcome your participation and your support.
