The Patriots had a tough time getting an out in the fifth inning.
They were chasing the ball around the field after eight consecutive hits, which brought home six runs.
The Vikings plated two more, too.
An eight-run fifth inning proved crucial for the Jay County High School softball team in a 12-7 loss on Monday to the Huntington North Vikings.
“That’s the problem, we had that really bad inning,” said JCHS coach Monty Missicano. “I was a little slow to react to get another pitcher in there. By the time (the reliever) got warmed up it was bad news.”
After managing five total hits and two runs through the first four innings, Huntington North (1-1) wasted little time the third trip through the order against Patriot starter Kailee Denney.
Kodi Douglass singled to begin the frame, and Laney Shaw followed with a blooper to left field. Megan Stephan ripped a two-run double to the fence ahead of an RBI double by Maddi Levy, and suddenly the 2-2 tie turned into a 5-2 Viking advantage.
Four consecutive singles — the first two chased Denney from the game and Misscano brought in Justice Day — brought the margin to 8-2.
An RBI double from Douglass and a Shaw RBI put Huntington North on top, 10-2.
“They hit the ball well,” Missicano said. Only four of the 12 batters the Vikings sent to the plate saw four or more pitches. Five others jumped on the first offering.
Jay County, which dipped to 0-2 on the year, cut into the deficit with three runs in the home half of the inning to trail 10-5, and one inning later they got one-run closer, 11-7.
“They came back and started playing well,” Missicano said. Kensey Litton, one of four Patriots with multi-hit games, had an RBI double in the sixth and Hannah Phillips knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly in the same inning. “I really can’t complain too much. They didn’t quit and they didn’t give up.”
A couple errors in the seventh gave the Vikings an insurance run, and the Patriots stranded Sam Twigg at second to end the game after she hit a two-out double.
Randi Ferguson, the designated player, led the Patriots with three singles, including an RBI in the second to score Olivia Bright after the freshman hit an opposite-field double to right field. Maggie Pryor finished with two singles, a walk and a pair of runs, and Twigg singled for a two-hit day.
“I thought we hit the ball well for the most part,” said Missicano, whose team was out-hit 17-11 and struck out seven times, including three consecutive called third strikes in the fifth inning. “For the most part we fielded the ball well. There was (four) errors, but this is early in the season. We’ll get it going.”
“Tomorrow we play Eastbrook. Hopefully we can get back on track there.”
