Free day set
Jay County Landfill will have a free landfill day from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday.
The landfill, located at 5825 W. 400 South, Portland, will accept one load per Jay County household, limited at 1.5 tons. Proof of residency may be required. It will not accept tires, yard waste, paints, hazardous waste, electronics or appliances containing Freon.
Drove off road
A Dunkirk teen was injured in a one-vehicle accident Wednesday morning.
Tre D. Bishop, 17, was headed northeast on Indiana 67 near its intersection with county road 125 South. The 1997 Chevrolet pickup truck he was driving went off the east side of the road as it curved.
Bishop, who sustained incapacitating back injuries and was taken to Indiana University Health Jay Hospital, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he couldn’t remember what caused the accident.
The truck he was driving is registered to Sheryl A. Grant, Eaton.
Damage in the 7:52 a.m. accident is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Mirror sideswipe
Two Portland residents were involved in vehicle collision early this morning.
Heather M. Lopez, 45, was driving a 2015 Ford Transit van south on county road 350 East near its intersection with county road 600 North. Charles S. Caster, 59, was driving north on county road 350 East. As the vehicles passed each other, their mirrors collided, causing damage to Caster’s 2001 Ford F150.
The van Lopez was driving is registered to Reliable Van Rentals, Portland.
Damage in the 5:46 a.m. collision is estimated to be less than $1,000.
Sign damaged
An employee at Farmers & Merchants State Bank reported property damage Wednesday.
According to a Portland Police Department report, a white truck hit an overhead open/close sign for the drive-thru teller window. The driver then left without stopping.
The bank is located at 1451 N. Meridian St., Portland.
In area courts
Several area residents were fined and sentenced recently in Celina (Ohio) Municipal Court.
Alexander S. Wehnes, 20, 2620 Sawmill Road, Fort Recovery, pleaded guilty to operating a vehicle under the influence and operating a vehicle under the influence of marijuana — Fined $375, assessed court costs and driver’s license suspended for one year.
Amythyst S. Brown, 28, 408 Second St., Fort Recovery, pleaded no contest to driving without a license, amended from driving under license suspension — Fined $50 and assessed court costs.
Others fined were: Carolyn R. Huntsman, 64, Portland, speeding, $25; Rebecca S. Dues, 57, Fort Recovery, speeding, $25; David M. Minnich, 31, Fort Recovery, speeding, $15; Reece Campbell, 21, Dunkirk, seatbelt violation, $116; Mynor S. Juarez Perez, 26, Portland, driving without a license and speeding, $235; Haley M. Knapke, 22, Fort Recovery, speeding, $25; John P. Amstutz, 64, Geneva, seatbelt violation, $30; David D. Alig, 50, Portland, towing requirement violation, $20.
