Capsule Reports
Three-car collision
Three vehicles were involved in a chain reaction collision early Sunday morning in Portland.
Reece D. Campbell, 21, Dunkirk, was driving his 2010 Nissan Maxima west on Votaw Street approaching its intersection with Industrial Drive. He told Portland Police Department he was distracted by reaching for a bottle on the floor of his vehicle and didn’t have time to stop before striking the rear of Aleah M. Weekley’s 2014 Kia Forte. Weekley, 20, Portland, was also traveling west on Votaw Street and was stopped at its intersection with Industrial Drive. The collision caused her car to strike the rear of Alicia A. Miller’s car. Miller, 46, Hartford City, was driving her 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe.
Weekley complained of head pain but refused treatment at the scene. She later sought medical treatment at Indiana University Health Jay Hospital.
Damage in the 12:46 a.m. collision is estimated between $25,000 and $50,000.
Backing accident
An Ossian woman and a Portland man were involved in a vehicle collision Saturday at Jay County Fairgrounds.
Amity J. Smith, 25, and Richard L. Eley, 74, were both backing up their vehicles from spaces opposite each other in a parking lot at 806 E. Votaw St., Portland, when they collided. Smith was driving her 2017 Honda Fit and Eley was driving his 1999 Ford Ranger.
Damage in the 12:50 p.m. accident is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Deer struck
A Salamonia man hit a deer with his car Saturday morning.
Gregory A. Ballard, 56, was driving his 2001 Toyota Sienna west on county road 600 North near its intersection with county road 650 East when a deer ran into the roadway.
Damage in the 4:31 a.m. collision is estimated to be less than $1,000.
Deer collision
A Union City woman hit a deer while driving Saturday evening, causing an estimated $1,000 to $2,500 in damage.
Ellie M. Kerns, 18, was driving south on U.S. 27 near its intersection with county road 300 North when a deer ran into the roadway. She was unable to avoid hitting the animal with the 2016 Ford Escape she was driving.
The Escape is registered to Reit Price Company, Union City.
The collision occurred at 9 p.m.
Cemetery theft
Several items were reported missing Sunday from a Bryant cemetery.
According to a Jay County Sheriff’s Office report, a cement bird bath, a cement bench and an angel statue were taken from a gravesite at Gravel Hill Cemetery, which is located at the intersection of county roads 650 North and 50 West.
Bumper damaged
A Portland man reported damage to his vehicle Saturday morning.
Scott Foy, who lives in the 600 block of Katelynn Drive, told Portland Police Department he noticed damage to the rear bumper of his 2011 Dodge van.
Window broken
A Portland woman reported damage to her car Sunday afternoon.
Rogina L. Prescott, who lives in the east 700 block of Walnut Street, reported that the rear window of her Chevrolet Impala had been broken.
