FORT WAYNE — Entering the seventh inning Monday, the TinCaps and Whitecaps were tied at three apiece.

That’s how many runs the home team scored in back-to-back innings to get their longest win streak of the season.

The Fort Wayne TinCaps pushed across three runs in the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie and added three more a frame later to grab a 9-3 victory against the West Michigan Whitecaps at Parkview Field.

It was the fifth straight win for Fort Wayne (18-25 second half, 51-60 overall), the longest such streak of the season. The fourth and final game of the series with the Whitecaps (14-29, 35-77), a Detroit Tigers affiliate, was played earlier this afternoon.

Jawuan Harris, who had a solo home run in the first inning, broke open the tie with a single in the seventh inning, and Agustin Ruiz followed with a two-run double.

After Ethan Skender and Justin Lopez singled to begin the eighth, Tyler Benson hit an RBI double to score Skender. Tucupita Marcano hit a one-out single to score Lopez, and Ruiz later walked with the bases loaded and two outs for the game’s final run.

Harris finished 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs. Skender also had three hits, while Marcano, Lopez and Benson had two apiece. It was the team-leading 33rd game this season Marcano had two or more hits.

Dwanya Williams-Sutton drew three walks, extending his on-base streak to 23 consecutive games.

Left-handed starting pitcher Ryan Weathers, the San Diego Padres’ No. 8 prospect, scattered five hits over six innings while allowing three earned runs. He struck out four and didn’t allow a walk.

Following Harris’ solo blast, his sixth of the season, and Lee Solomon’s two-run double — his 21st — in the second inning, West Michigan tied the game with three runs in the sixth.

Dayton Dugas singled and Zach Malis doubled before Wenceel Perez hit a two-run double to put the Whitecaps on the board. Nick Quintana hit a sacrifice fly with one out to tie the game, but it was short- lived.

Cody Tyler struck out a pair, allowed one hit and walked one in two frames of relief of Weathers to earn the win. He moved to 3-2 on the year.

Roster moves

The San Diego Padres organization announced recent changes to the Fort Wayne roster.

This morning, the Padres transferred C.J. Abrams, the team’s No. 6 pick in June’s draft, to Fort Wayne from the rookie-league Arizona League. Luke Becker was transferred from Fort Wayne to short-season Tri-City Dust Devils.

Abrams, a shortstop, is rated as the team’s No. 5 prospect, according to MLB.com. The lefty at the plate led the Arizona League in hitting with a .401 average in 32 games. Abrams, an 18-year-old from Alpharetta, Georgia, was tied for the league lead in triples (eight) and fourth in doubles (12). He had three home runs and a .622 slugging percentage.

On Monday, the Padres transferred right-handed reliever Franklin Van Gurp to the TinCaps from High-A Lake Elsinore Storm.

Van Gurp made 14 appearances for Lake Elsinore since being traded to the Padres organization from the San Francisco Giants on June 10. He had an ERA of 6.38 in that span. The 6-foot, 1-inch, 23-year-old from Philipsburg, Saint Martin, pitched in two Double-A games as a member of the Giants.

Starting pitcher Sam Keating was transferred from Fort Wayne to short-season Tri-City as a corresponding move for Van Gurp.

Honored

Joey Cantillo was named Midwest League Pitcher of the Week, the league announced earlier Monday.

“I appreciate the recognition,” Cantillo said in a release, “But it’s only poissible with the help of my teammates and coaches, and I know I need to continue working hard to improve.”

It is the third time this season the 19-year-old Hawaiian lefty had earned the award, marking the first time a Fort Wayne player has accomplished the feat. He also becomes the first MWL player since Zack Erwin of the Beloit Snappers in 2017 to be given the award three times in the same season.

In his last two starts, July 29 and Sunday respectively, Cantillo allowed one earned run on four hits, struck out 13 and walked five in 12 innings. Cantillo threw six no-hit innings on Sunday.
