Cafe crash
A pair of vehicles collided Monday morning as one driver was waiting to turn into Jinny’s Cafe in Bryant.
Brylee Speed, 21, rural Portland, told Jay County police he was driving south on U.S. 27 and did not see a vehicle driven by Clifford R. Smith, 78, Geneva, stopped in the road. Smith was waiting to turn into Jinny’s Cafe.
The 2005 Dodge Neon Speed was driving struck Smith’s 2001 Ford Ranger. The Neon is registered to William D. Speed, Portland.
Damage in the 6:53 a.m. collision was estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.
Struck tree
A vehicle driven by a rural Portland teen sustained between $5,000 and $10,000 in damage when it went off the road and struck a tree Monday.
Hayden J. Norton, 16, told Jay County police he was driving west on Division Road near its intersection with county road 400 West when loose gravel caused him to lose control of the 2000 Dodge Ram he was driving. The vehicle went off the north side of the road and struck a tree about 4:50 p.m.
The Ram is registered to Debra K. Haffner, rural Portland.
Votaw collision
Vehicles driven by a Portland man and an Ohio man collided on Votaw Street in Portland on Monday morning.
Tommy E. Smith, 68, Portland, told Portland police he was attempting to turn east onto Votaw Street from the Village Pantry parking lot, 704 N. Meridian St. As he made the turn, his 2006 GMC Canyon collided with a 2000 Chevrolet S10 driven by Danny R. Shartzer, 67, of Trenton, Ohio. Smith said he did not see Shartzer’s truck because of traffic obstructing his view.
Damage in the 7:15 a.m. accident was estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
