WOODBURN — The Patriots took a lead in the first half.
They put the game away in the second.
Jay County High School’s boys soccer team scored two insurance goals in the final 40 minutes Monday to beat the host Woodlan Warriors 3-0.
The Patriots (2-0), who defeated Seton Catholic on Thursday and are amidst a seven-game road swing to start the season, jumped out front with a goal in the first half.
Two more tallies after intermission gave Jay County a comfortable lead it never relinquished.
Hunter Shumaker scored twice to notch the first multi-goal game of his career. His three goals this season match his total from all of last year.
Cristian Marentes also scored for Jay County. It was his second goal in as many games. Gio Perod and Brayden Sprunger chipped in assists.
Ian Ruiz, Jay County’s sophomore goalkeeper, turned away eight Warrior shots for the first clean sheet of his career.
Tribe falls to Cavs
CELINA, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s boys golf team lost to the Coldwater Cavaliers on Monday, 174-187 at Mercer County Elks Golf Club.
Grant Knapke, a senior, led the Indians by shooting 4-over-par 40 to earn match medalist honors. His round included a birdie on the par-5 first hole and four pars.
Carson Rammel was second on the team with 44, and Derek Lochtefeld was third with his round of 47. Zander Kunkler rounded out the total score with his 56.
Cole Muhlenkamp (57) and AJ Romer (62) also competed for the Indians, but they did not factor into the team score.

ends shutout
A late touchdown ended a potential shutout as the Jay County junior varsity football team lost to the Norwell Knights on Monday, 32-8.
Sam Dunlavy connected with Josh Dowlen for a touchdown pass, but by then the Knights were already head of the Patriots (0-1) by a 32-0 margin.
Norwell built its lead with six points in the first quarter and went into half leading 14-0. A 12-point effort pushed the Knight advantage to 26-0 after three quarters.
