DECATUR — Lydia Keihn earned another top-10 finish.
The Patriot girls were in the top five again too.
Keihn crossed the finish line sixth and led the Jay County High School girls cross country team as it was fourth Tuesday in the Bellmont Invitational.
The Leo Lions, who had four finish in the top 10, scored 48 points for first place. South Side totaled 81 for second and Bishop Luers scored 119 for third. Jay County had 135 points.
The host Braves won the boys meet with 22 points. New Haven (47) was second and South Side (111) finished third. Jay County scored 235 for eighth.
Keihn had a time of 21 minutes, 13.3 seconds for sixth, one spot lower than her finish in the Celina Rotary Invitational on Saturday.
Raven Weaver (22:12.3) was 11th, Sophia Fugiett (23:30.2) took 24th, Lindy Wood (23:40.7) placed 26th and Lita Chowning (28:23) was 68th.
Thomas LeMaster was the top JCHS boy as he was 35th in 20:22.4. Aaron Funkhouser had a time of 20:28.6 for 37th and Mitchell Winner ended 44th in 20:44.6. Ethan Andreshak crossed 58th in 21:34.2, and Dustin Harris completed the team score by finishing 61st in 21:47.5.
Patriots move to 5-0
WINCHESTER — The Jay County volleyball team stayed perfect Tuesday with a clean sweep of the Winchester Golden Falcons, 25-14, 25-16, 25-15.
The Patriots move to 5-0 on the season, and host state-line rival Fort Recovery on Tuesday.
Sara Hemmelgarn paced the Patriot offense with 10 kills, while also adding seven digs on the defensive end. Natalie Miles contributed six kills and eight digs, while Alana Kunkler contributed eight kills.
Pacie Denney collected 20 assists and five digs. Hallie Fields posted 11 digs to lead the team.
Jay County’s junior varsity team won, 25-19, 22-25, 15-8. Madison Jetmore had five kills. Raylin Chaffins totaled 18 digs, and Izzy Rodgers had 12 assists.
Tennis tops Indians
UNION CITY — Jay County’s boys tennis team picked up tis first win of the season Tuesday with a 3-2 triumph over the Union City Indians.
Freshman Simon Dirksen claimed his first career win, defeating Cale Jeffris 6-3, 7-5 in their No. 3 singles bout.
Sheldon Upp, a senior, and sophomore Gavin Myers toppled Bryton Stewart and Braydon Hoggatt 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles, while the duo of Frankie Crump and Darius Esparza knocked off Daniel Eley and Will Botkin 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.
Crosby Heniser fell at No. 1 singles to John Carpenter by a 6-4, 6-2 margin, while Calvin Whitney lost to Tanner Spence 6-2, 6-3 in their No. 2 singles match.
Jay loses
NEW CASTLE — Any chance of a season-opening winning streak for the Jay County boys soccer team came to a halt Tuesday with a 5-1 loss to sectional rival New Castle.
The Patriots (2-1), were tied 1-1 with the Trojans but a four-goal second half propelled New Castle to the win.
Cristian Marentes notched the lone goal for the Patriots. It was his third goal of the season, moving him into a tie for the team lead with Hunter Shumaker.
Jay County’s junior varsity team won, 1-0, Mathias Perod netted the JCHS goal on an assist from Kaleb Meadows.
