Roy DeBoy

Aug. 19, 1944-Dec. 10, 2019

Roy Dean DeBoy, age 75, of Marion passed away Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2019, at Marion General Hospital.

Roy was born in Portland, Indiana, on Aug. 19, 1944, the son of Gerald and Madonna (Bailey) DeBoy. He was married June 4, 1966, to Sue Laux who survives. He was a 1962 Portland High School graduate. He served with the U.S. Navy from 1962 to 1965. He retired from a local factory in Marion after 30 years of service.

Roy was affectionately known as Granddad and loved spending time with his family. He was an avid sports fan and loved NASCAR — Dale Jarrett was his favorite. He attended the Brickyard 400 several times and always joked that Dale would wave to him when he passed. He was a University of Notre Dame fan, both basketball and football. He was a baseball card collector, a hobby he enjoyed and shared with his son. He was an honorary bingo caller at the Laux family Christmas. He was a good guy that brought many smiles and laughs to all around him.

He fought a long battle against ALS. In this battle, he demonstrated his strong character and his love for his family. He was so strong and brave and made his family so proud. At the end of his battle we were gifted a special time to share memories that we would cherish. He would do anything for his family. His main concern was to make sure his family was cared for, especially his wife, Sue.

He is survived by his wife Sue; one daughter, Debra Goodman (husband: Bart) of Marion; one son, Scott DeBoy (wife: Jennifer) of Marion; four grandchildren, Kimberly Cox, Matt DeBoy, Alyssa Goodman and Garrett Goodman; two great-grandchildren Jaden DeBoy and Brooklynn Cox; brothers-in-law Steve Laux (wife: Laura), Larry Laux (wife: Lori) and Larry Gibson, all of Portland; sister-in-law Joan Hudson of Ossian; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Rex and Gerald; and sister Janet Gibson.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Dec. 14, 2019, at 3 p.m. in the Baird-Freeman Funeral Home Portland, Indiana, with Cathy Fugiett presiding. Burial will follow in the Center Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to ALS Foundation or Holy Family Church in Gas City.
