Mason Winner pinned his way to the final.

His title match didn’t get out of the first period.

Chandler Chapman reached the championship match with a pin and a four-point win.

He had to outlast a familiar opponent.

Both are champs again.

Winner and Chapman repeated as regional champions on Saturday as the host Jay County High School wrestling team had five qualify for semi-state from the IHSAA regional tournament.

South Adams, which had three wrestle for regional championships, also had five advance to semi-state.

The top four places in each weight class earn a berth in semi-state, which will be Saturday at Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne.

Adams Central scored 140 points to run away with the team title, its first in 30 years. Norwell was a distant second with 97.5 points, and Bellmont totaled 88 points for third.

Jay County (80) and South Adams (66) were fifth and sixth, respectively.

“I thought we wrestled all right,” said JCHS coach Eric Meyers. “I thought in the early rounds we looked a little sluggish. I’m not sure why that is. I would have liked to have more (at semi-state), but the guys that we do have, they wrestled hard. They deserve it and I’m proud of them.”

Chapman, a 195-pound senior, rolled through the first round over Wapahani’s Samuel Piercy in 2 minutes, 30 seconds, then won by 7-3 decision over Yorktown’s Tyson Enis in the semifinal.

Awaiting him in the final was Norwell junior Cale Gray, who Chapman outlasted 12-11 in the sectional championship a week earlier.

Donning his Captain America singlet, Chapman scored a couple takedowns in the opening period and after each immediately let Gray go for the escape. The idea was to continue with that format, as he felt he was better on his feet than Gray.

Chapman gifted Gray an escape to start the second period before Gray notched a takedown to take a 5-4 advantage. But Chapman escaped and took Gray to the mat again before letting him out.

Clinging to a 7-6 lead in the third, Gray had Chapman’s elbow locked and wrenched his body in an attempt to roll the JCHS senior for a near fall. But Chapman kept his shoulders upright and never let Gray get his points.

“It was very difficult,” Chapman said. He is now 14-0 on the year. “My shoulder felt like it was ready to pop. I just turned my head and cranked down as hard as I could without going too far.”

Gray got charged with an illegal hold and Chapman eventually won, 8-6, to build off his 170-pound title from last season.

“It means a lot,” he said. “I’m ready to go into semi-state. … I’ve got to put in work and be ready for next Saturday.”

Winner, a 182-pound junior, got three pins on his way to his second consecutive regional championship. It took 3:09 to pin Josh Gooden of Winchester in the opening round, and he needed 4:40 to deposit Cameron Harris of Norwell. In the championship, a rematch of the sectional final, seventh-ranked Winner (36-2) pinned Monty Hill of Adams Central in 1:56.

“He’s just staying solid in all positions and grinding out matches right now,” Myers said. “He knows he’s going to have to turn it up next week.”

Jay County senior Dawson Frasher also competed for the championship in the 220-pound weight class, but he got pinned by Adams Central’s Jashawn Berlanga in 40 seconds.

Jordan Schricker (145 pounds) and Thomas Hemmelgarn (152) both advance to semi-state for the second straight year as they were third in their respective weight classes.

South Adams had three wrestlers compete for regional titles, all of whom came up short.

At 138 pounds, freshman AJ Dull dropped an 8-3 decision to William Fiechter of Southern Wells.

“My favorite part of the day was AJ,” SAHS coach Jesse Gaskill said. “That was a lot of fun. I hope everyone enjoyed watching him as much as we did. That was just top-notch. He went nuts today, so if he’s going to peak, peak at the right time.”

Christian Summersett lost in the 170-pound title match to county rival Parker Bates of Adams Central, and heavyweight Andre Hughes lost by a 5-1 decision to seventh-ranked Holden Parsons of Yorktown in the 285-pound final.

Logan Bauman, a freshman 106-pounder, and Spencer Clark (220) were third and fourth respectively in their weight classes.
