Icy conditions
Several vehicles slid off the road Monday night in icy conditions.
At 9:25 p.m., Judith J. Wilkin, 67, Hartford City, was driving a 1997 Freightliner semi east on Indiana 18 approaching its intersection with county road 500 West at a curve in the road. Wilkin said she was driving slowly but the truck did not make the turn, sliding on ice off the south side of the road into several trees. The truck is registered to Tony L. Quilien, Hartford City.
Damage in the accident is estimated between $10,000 and $25,000.
Earlier that night at 8:13 p.m., Jessie J. Duncan, 20, Portland, was driving east on county road 100 South near its intersection with Blaine Pike. She lost control of her 2006 Buick LaCrosse on the slush and snow, driving off the north side of the road and striking a mailbox owned by Robert Myers.
Damage in the collision is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Gail E. Franks, 72, Bryant, was driving north on U.S. 27 near its intersection with county road 300 South when she hit a patch of ice on the road. Her 2001 Ford Explorer went off the east side of the road, striking and breaking a utility pole. Damage in the 9:13 p.m. accident is estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.
Fire calls
Dunkirk Fire Department and Redkey Fire Department each responded to fire reports Tuesday.
Dunkirk’s fire department was called to a home in the north 400 block of Main Street for a report of smoke. There was no fire.
In Redkey, firefighters responded to a home in the west 800 block of High Street for a grease fire. No further information was available.
Backing accident
A Portland teen hit a parked car while backing out of space last week in the Jay County High School parking lot.
On Feb. 6, Neo S. Ferrell, 16, was backing up a 2013 Toyota Scion from a spot at the high school, 2072 W. Indiana 67, Portland. He told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he turned too sharply and struck the 1998 Dodge Dakota parked beside him.
The Dodge is registered to Elizabeth C. Blowers, Bryant. The Toyota Ferrell was driving is registered to Helen M. Ferrell, Portland.
Damage in the 3:18 p.m. collision is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Pole struck
An Ohio woman knocked over a utility pole with her vehicle after losing control on the snow-covered road Sunday.
Carol S. Hahn, 67, North Canton, Ohio, was driving a 2017 Lexus RX 350 east on Indiana 67 approaching its intersection with county road 850 East when the vehicle started to go off the south side of the road. The Lexus then went off the north side of the road into a ditch and struck a REMC utility pole, knocking it over.
The Lexus is registered to Daniel A. Hahn, North Canton, Ohio.
Damage in the 4:05 p.m. accident is estimated between $10,000 and $25,000.
