Katy Smeltzer earned a handful of national cuts in October.

On Saturday, she got another one. A better one, at that.

Smeltzer, a 2015 Jay County High School graduate, earned an NAIA national A cut for the University of the Cumberlands women’s swim team as it split a meet with Indiana State and Wittenberg.

The senior was third in the 100-yard freestyle with her time of 56.06 seconds to grab the national cut. She was more than a second and a half faster than the B cut she earned back on Oct. 13.

Smeltzer also anchored the 400 medley relay that won with a time of 4 minutes, 0.05 seconds. She joined Christina Klouda, Julia Hnidenko and Mendy De Rooi to win by more than six seconds.

Individually, Smeltzer was also fifth in the 50 freestyle in 25.94 seconds, and handled the third leg of the 400 freestyle relay that was third in 3:45.36.

The third-ranked Patriots defeated Wittenberg 190-74, but lost to ISU 194-93.



Hanna Ault

Jay County – 2018

Totaled 15 points over two games for the Anderson University women’s basketball team in a pair of losses recently.

The freshman went 3-of-4 from the field, including a 3-pointer, to finish with seven points on Saturday in a 71-48 loss to Hanover College. She also had two rebounds and a pair of steals.

In a 59-58 loss Wednesday to Rose-Hulman, Ault was 2-of-6 from the field, including 1-of-4 from the 3-point line, and made all three of her free throws to score eight points while grabbing three rebounds and passing one assist for the Ravens (8-8, 4-5 HCAC).

Ault is averaging five points and 2.1 rebounds in the 13 games she’s played this year.

South Adams – 2017

Competed for the University of Findlay women’s swim team on Friday in a 143-97 loss to Grand Valley State.

Ashton finished fourth in the 200-yard individual medley with her time of 2 minutes, 17.28 seconds, and Brette was sixth in 2:22.49.

In the 100 butterfly, Ashton had a time of 1:00.55 for fifth, and Brette finished sixth in the 100 backstroke in 1:03.67.

Ashton swam the butterfly leg of the 200 medley B relay that was third in 1:50.91, and Brette handled the breaststroke leg of the Oilers’ 200 medley C relay that was fifth in 1:56.29.



Lexi Dellinger

South Adams – 2018

Was held scoreless for the first time this season on Wednesday as the Anderson University women’s basketball team lost to Rose-Hulman.

The freshman point guard missed all three shots she took from the field in the setback. She also had four assists and one rebound.

Dellinger scored 11 points on 4-of-10 shooting and a free throw on Saturday in the Ravens’ loss to Hanover. She also had four assists and one rebound in the ninth straight game in which she scored in double figures.

The former Starfire had her scoring average dip by one full point to 15.4 points per game.



Tyler Leonhard

Jay County – 2017

Finished 2-2 for the Manchester University wrestling team in the Spartan Mat Classic it hosted on Saturday.

Competing at 174 pounds, Leonhard won his first match of the day with a 9-3 decision over Indiana Tech’s Avery Jacobs before losing by major decision, 11-3, to Baldwin Wallace’s Adam Green in the quarterfinal.

The sophomore rebounded with a 11-2 major decision against Mason Morris of Defiance before bowing out of the tournament in the consolation bracket with a 7-2 defeat to Stephen Watson of Wheaton.

 

Whitney Will

Fort Recovery – 2017

Tied for fourth in scoring for the University of Saint Francis women’s basketball team on Saturday in a 74-50 win over Goshen College.

The sophomore scored eight points on 4-of-7 shooting, grabbed one rebound and had an assist in the win.

On Wednesday, Will scored two points, had two rebounds and another assist as the Cougars (14-7, 6-3 Crossroads League) beat Spring Arbor, 73-36.

Will has appeared in all but one game this season and is averaging 5.6 points per game.



Micaiah Cox

Fort Recovery – 2017

Totaled a career-high eight points on Wednesday for the Defiance College men’s basketball team in an 86-82 setback to Earlham College.

The sophomore came off the bench to play a season-high 20 minutes and went 2-of-4 from the field. He also made all four of his free-throw attempts, hauled in a team-high seven rebounds while also blocking a shot and dishing an assist for the Yellow Jackets (2-14, 0-9 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference).

Cady Farlow

South Adams – 2015

Swam for the Purdue University women’s swim team on Friday in a 191-102 road win against Michigan State.

The senior was fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke with her time of 1 minute, 4.59 seconds. She also helped the Boilermakers’ 200 medley B relay finish third in 1:45.38. Farlow swam the breaststroke leg, joining Tessa Wrightson, Breanna Robinson and Courtney Kresl to finish 3.03 seconds behind Purdue’s winning A relay.



Jocie Kaiser

Fort Recovery – 2017

Played for the Capital University women’s basketball team on Wednesday in a 62-49 win over Heidelberg.

The sophomore was 1-of-3 from the field with a 3-pointer in three minutes off the bench to finish with three points. She also had an assist for the Crusaders (10-6, 5-4 Ohio Athletic Conference).
