RICHMOND — The Patriots had won three games in the not-so-distant past.
They head into sectional with three consecutive losses.
The Jay County High School softball team saw its 8-3 lead in the sixth inning turn into a two-run deficit and they weren’t able to get it back in a 10-8 loss to the Richmond Red Devils.
It was the third consecutive loss for the Patriots, who end the regular season at 9-11 and meet host Hamilton Heights in the sectional opener at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Jay County scored once in the second inning and twice in the third for a 3-0 lead, and pushed it to 8-0 with five runs in the fifth.
Richmond got on the board as it answered by scoring three times in the home half of the frame. The Red Devils struck for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth and the Patriots couldn’t return the favor with a rally.
Aubrie Schwieterman tripled for the Patriots, and Olivia Bright chipped in a pair of singles. Kensey Litton, Shelby Caldwell and Hanna Dillon all singled.
Stars win finale
PONETO — The South Adams junior varsity baseball team capped its season with a 7-2 win over the host Southern Wells Raiders on Friday.
The Starfires (9-7) got a pair of runs in each of the first two innings for the only lead they really needed. One run in the fourth and sixth innings pushed the score to 6-0 before the Raiders plated their only runs in the home half of the sixth.
South Adams added an insurance run in the seventh even though it was out-hit by the Raiders, 9-6.
Colin Subler and Tyler Yoder had two hits apiece for the Starfires. Yoder also picked up the win, allowing two runs with eight strikeouts and a walk.
