CELINA, Ohio — The preseason goal was to be in the running for a conference title.
A late-season injury changed that. So the Patriots adjusted.
Play the best golf they can against the rest of the league.
A freshman earned all-conference accolades. An inexperienced senior continued to make strides.
Oh, what could have been if at full strength.
Kyle Sanders was 12th overall and together with Joey Hall and Seth Wilson the Patriot trio shot the best rounds of their careers in helping the Jay County High School boys golf team finish sixth in the Allen County Athletic Conference tournament on Monday at Celina Lynx.
Bluffton won the tournament, which was shortened to a 9-hole round after the 18-hole round on Saturday was postponed because of unplayable conditions, with a team score of 180. Heritage was runner-up with 189, one ahead of Adams Central.
Jay County shot 213 for sixth, and South Adams was last out of seven teams with 215.
“At the beginning of the season I wanted to see us as a team finishing in the top three at the conference meet,” said first-year JCHS coach Ryan Steinbrunner, whose team was without its top golfer Griffin Mann after the sophomore had surgery last week to repair a broken finger. “I think with Griffin, today that is a reasonable goal. But without him we understood coming in that was going to be tough.
“A reasonable goal would be everyone come in and shoot your best round of the year.”
Sanders, who played for Steinbrunner for two years at the middle school level, did just that. Bumped up to the No. 1 spot in place of Mann, Sanders never really got into too much trouble. He made par once, on the 180-yard, par-3 seventh hole, and bogeyed both the par-3 third and the par-4 fifth holes. He double bogeyed the other six in shooting a career-best 47.
Because he finished 12th overall, he was awarded second team all-conference. The top seven made first team while places eighth through 14 were second team.
“It’s exciting for him,” Steinbrunner said. “I had him when he was in middle school for two years. He has put in a lot of work being out with the team.
“I hope he continues to put that work in this summer because second team all-conference as a freshman — he’s got a lot of time left in high school — if he develops his craft he’s got a good future ahead of him.”
Spencer Schwartz of Bluffton shot 1-over par 37 for the individual championship.
Hall, who made par on the third hole, tied Wilson with 55, a career-best for both. Devin Harris shot 56 to complete the Patriots’ team score.
Throughout the round, which included temperatures in the high 50s and gusty wind throughout, Steinbrunner said what he liked the most out of his squad was the fact it never let a bad shot linger mentally.
“I’ve seen a lot of times this year guys get frustrated,” he said. “They were out there (tonight) having fun. They were enjoying the rounds of golf they were playing.”
Blaine Harruff of South Adams squeaked out first team all-ACAC with his round of 46, which included par three times. He was in a logjam of five players who all had the same score, but came out as the leader based upon their performance on the course’s hardest hole, the 415-yard, par-4 eighth.
He made par, edging Seth Roop of Heritage, Mason Schwartz of Bluffton as well as Taylor Swymeler and Cole Depew of Woodlan.
Spencer Fear shot 53 for the Starfires’ No. 2 score, and Josh Hostettler totaled 57. Brendan Campbell completed the South Adams team score as he carded 59.
Matthew Hall of Jay County and Alec Neuenschwander both shot 69, but they did not factor into their respective team scores.
With the conference tournament out of the way, Steinbrunner says he’s using the limited time left in the season as a way to continue building for the future.
“We have a young team,” he said. “We have every intention of winning this tournament next year. If we can use these last couple weeks to improve, go out at sectional and put our lowest score of the year up, we go in with a lot of confidence next year.”
