Bald eagle needs to be protected

Letters to the editor

To the editor:

We were saddened to learn of the shooting of a juvenile bald eagle in Geneva earlier this month.

Geneva is Bird Town No. 1, and the bald eagle is our national symbol. The bird has been extirpated from this area for over 100 years.

The first bald eagle to be seen in the Upper Wabash was spotted in February 2005 in Lagro along the Wabash River to much excitement and anticipation of the bald eagle reclaiming its territory here.

It has only been a short time that the bald eagles have returned to Geneva. The first nesting was in 2010.

The State of Indiana invested money to bring bald eagle chicks from Alaska between 1985 and 1989 to Lake Monroe in southern Indiana. It was hoped that they would repopulate the state. We are pleased it has been successful and Hoosiers can once again see our national symbol flying over Geneva. We are just now starting to get a small population of the bald eagle in the area.

It is hoped that this will not happen again that a bald eagle is shot in Geneva or anywhere else.

The Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act specifies civil penalties for shooting, trapping and wounding a bald eagle.

We urge the local authorities, Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to take swift action to prosecute the offender.

Sincerely,

Terri Gorney

Reader dismayed

To the editor:

I was dismayed to read that we (my fellow citizens and I) have, ostensibly, a commander in chief who, lacking a moral compass or a sense of compunction, seeks to infect and corrupt one of our bastions of truth and integrity: The United States Military.

As a veteran, I am repulsed almost daily by the behavior of one man so morally reprehensible that he would, in his self-interest, betray the Constitution and Laws he has sworn to protect, defend and uphold.

The first nail in democracy’s coffin is the truth. We are seeing on a daily basis, that nail being driven, not only by the morally bankrupt occupant of the White House but by the sycophantic minions who eagerly do his bidding. As Nikita Khrushchev said many years ago: "We will take America without firing a shot."
