WOODBURN — The Patriots fought back.

A 15-point deficit proved too much to erase in eight minutes.

Jay County High School’s girls basketball game came up four points short in its comeback attempt Friday night as it fell 55-51 to the host Woodlan Warriors.

The Patriots (1-4, 0-1 Allen County Athletic Conference) had just 26 points through three quarters before coming storming back. Freshman Renna Schwieterman led the effort with nine of her game-high 20 points in the the fourth quarter and senior Hallie Fields added seven. But Woodlan made just enough free throws — 9-of-16 in the final eight minutes — to hold on.

Schwieterman did most of her damage at the foul line, hitting all of her 12 free-throw attempts. Madison Dirksen joined her in double figures with 10 points, and Fields finished with nine points.

Addison Bayman, who hit six fourth-quarter free throws, powered Woodlan (6-1, 1-0 ACAC) with 18 points. Dakotah Krohn and Gabby Joyce each scored 12 points.

Jay County lost the junior varsity game 29-24. Andrea Jutte paced the Patriots with 11 points.
