BERNE — The top three Patriots all took time off their career bests.

One by five seconds. Another by 40. The third by nearly a minute.

While they cut time off their individual races, they weren't able to break up the Starfires.

Jay County High School's girls cross country team saw improvement from its top three runners and had two finish in the top 10 as it was third as a squad in the Allen County Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday at South Adams.

“We were hoping to battle it out for either first or second,” said JCHS coach Paul Hyatt. “It was really, really close up there. South Adams always has good runners and we needed to beat them in order to win.

“That was kind of the goal, but maybe next year, we'll see. But very, very proud of what they were able to do today. A lot of them ran their best times.”

South Adams had all five of its scoring runners place in the top 13 to earn a total of 36 points and claim the program's sixth straight conference championship. Woodlan was the runner-up with 76 points, four ahead of Jay County.

South Adams also won the boys race for a clean sweep, taking the top two positions in scoring 36 points to dethrone two-time defending champion Heritage. Woodlan was the runner-up with 61 points, and Heritage took third with 63 points.

Jay County's boys totaled 134 points for sixth.

Lydia Keihn, a Jay County freshman, made her way toward the front of the pack early on along with teammate Sophia Fuigett.

In a group of runners that included Megan Miller of South Adams, Addie Goheen of Woodlan and Olivia Reynolds of Adams Central, they were fighting to stay in the top 10 while chasing Abby Gentz of Woodlan, McKenzie Sturwold and Kallee Patch of South Adams, Leslie Sprankles of Bluffton and defending champion Marissa Van De Weg of Adams Central.

Gentz took control of the lead spot never relinquished her position. Sturwold settled into second and Van De Weg was third. Just after the mile mark, Keihn climbed up to fourth, and that's where she stayed until the end of the race.

Gentz won with a time of 18 minutes, 34 seconds, nearly 25 seconds ahead of runner-up Sturwold. Keihn crossed the finish line with a new career-best time of 20:19.9, more than five seconds faster than her time from a week earlier at the Delta Invitational, which was run on the same course where the Patriots will be for this weekend’s sectional race.

“Her times just keep getting better and better,” Hyatt said. “She kind of stuck at the beginning of the season around 21 minutes, and now she's starting to see some breakthroughs.”

Fugiett was eighth in 21:03.5, improving her best time by 40 seconds. She just missed out on first team All-ACAC, which went to the top seven places. Those finishing eighth through 14 were named to the second team.

Lindy Wood cut nearly a minute off her best time as she ended in 21:35.8 for 11th to garner second-team all-conference honors.

Raven Weaver (22:42.3) was 20th and Lita Chowning (25.47.7) ended 39th.

“They're all kind of getting a lot better so that's good,” Hyatt said.

Last season's champion, Sam Martinez of South Adams, was second overall to his teammate Clancy McIntire. Just like his brother Bailey did to start races, Clancy jumped to the front early on and never surrendered the position. McIntire had a time of 16:39.1. Martinez finished 26 seconds behind him.

Thomas LeMaster was the top JCHS boy and he was 22nd in 19:00.2. Ben Hunter (19:18.8) and Mitchell Winner (19:19.9) were 28th and 29th, respectively, while Zade Fosnaugh (19:38.8) placed 33rd and Aaron Funkhouser (19:41.8) was one spot behind him.

“Their place doesn't show the amount of work they put in,” Hyatt said. “They're a young group of guys but they keep getting better, and better, and better, and that's all you can ask for as a coach.”

Middle school

Cameron Clark was second overall as the East Jay Middle School boys finished third with 79 points. Adams Central won with 29 points, and Bluffton was second with 77.

West Jay totaled 183 points for seventh.

Adams Central also won the girls race with 48 points. South Adams (54) was second, Southern Wells (77) placed third and East Jay (82) was fourth. West Jay did not qualify for a team score.

Clark had a time of 11:07.2 for second, while Trace Maller of Adams Central won in 10:47.8.

Tony Wood had a time of 11:52.2 for 12th, and Creed Beiswanger ended his season 18th in 12:20.9. Carson Davis (12:47.3) and Gabe Pinkerton (12:48.2) were 23rd and 24th, respectively.

Liam Garringer had a time of 12:57.4 and was 26th as the top West Jay boy. Jackson Edwards finished 33rd in 13:18.9, Trevin Dunnington placed 43rd in 14:14.4, Landon Grayson took 51st in 14:42.9 and Aiden Stephens ended in 14:51 for 52nd.

Ayla Grabner (12:22.8) and Alexis Sibray (12:33.8) were third and fourth respectively for East Jay's girls. Paityn Wendel had a time of 13:35.5 for 21st, as Emily Manor (14:03.9) was 26th and Aubrey Millspaugh (14:36.6) took 29th.

Hailey Ayala of West Jay was 28th in 14:19.1, and Lucy Raines ended 39th in 15:22.
