It’s time to start voting.

Early voting opens Tuesday for this year’s municipal election, which features races for mayor in Portland and Dunkirk.

Early voting will be available at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in the voting room on the south side of the first floor of Jay County Courthouse. Voting will be available weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4:30 p.m. through Nov. 1. Saturday voting hours will be available from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 2.

In Portland, Democrat Randy Geesaman is seeking a third term as mayor after defeating Portland assistant police chief Bart Darby in the primary. He is being challenged by Republican John Boggs, general manager of WPGW Radio, who was uncontested in May.

Dunkirk Mayor Gene Ritter, a Republican who works for Workhorse Custom Chassis in Union City, is seeking his second term as mayor after defeating Tom Crouch in the primary. Democrat Jack Robbins, a retired laborer and current member of city council, will try to unseat him after knocking off Sandra Rollins in May.

Four Portland City Council seats are also up for grabs, with Democrat Dave Cramer taking on Republican Matt Goldsworthy in District 1. They are vying for the seat that is being given up by longtime council member Bill Gibson, a Republican.

In District 2, incumbent Democrat Judy Hedges, who took over the seat after the death of her husband Mark, is facing a challenge from independent Mike Aker.

Three candidates are vying for the city’s pair of at-large seats on council. Incumbent Republican Janet Powers is seeking re-election against Democrats Dave Golden and Tyler Newell.

Current council member Judy Aker chose not to run for another term.

The race for Dunkirk clerk-treasurer offers three options — incumbent Democrat Tina Elliott, Republican Jay Miller and independent Kelly Watson.

Dunkirk also has two contested city council races, with incumbent Republican Jesse Bivens taking on independent Tommy “Chip” Phillips in District 3. For the at-large seat, incumbent Democrat Tom Johnson is being challenged by Republican Richard Buckner.

For clerk-treasurer in Redkey, incumbent Democrat Debbie James is facing a challenge from independent Myra Davis.

Six candidates are seeking three at-large seats on Redkey Town Council. The list is made up of Democrats “Watermellon” Jim Phillips, Erik Hammers and Nathan Cole, and Republicans Pilot Bechtol, John Pierce and Gary Gardner. Incumbents Doug Stanley and Ted Friddle chose not to run for re-election while incumbent Dave Dudelston lost in the Republican primary.
