DUNKIRK — The city has a new leader for its police department.
Dunkirk Mayor Gene Ritter announced late this morning that Tracy Layman has been appointed the city’s new police chief.
Layman will take over for Dane Mumbower, who Ritter removed from the position Monday.
“I truly did this for the good of the department,” said Ritter, adding that he could not give further details. “I did this for the good of the city.”
Layman previously served as the department’s captain. He has been on the Dunkirk police force since January 2015 and previously served as Redkey Town Marshal.
“I chose Tracy because he’s been a town marshal. He’s my most senior police officer in the department,” said Ritter. “I trust Tracy. He’s a stand-up guy. He wants to do what’s right for the city and for the citizens.
“But the biggest thing is I trust him.”
Mumbower remains on staff as a patrol officer for the city.
