Rural Portland man dies following accident
A rural Portland man is dead following a one-car accident about noon Wednesday at county road 650 South and U.S. 27.
Jay County Sheriff’s Office believes Michael J. Fellers, 71, 891 E. 650 South, was ill or experienced a medical issue, causing him to drive his 2002 Ford Focus off the north side of 650 South, just east of U.S. 27. His car struck a mailbox then continued east, going off the south side of the road and hitting a small tree.
He was taken by Jay Emergency Medical Service to IU Health Jay in Portland where he was pronounced dead. His death was attributed to medical issues rather than injuries from the accident.
Damage was estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.
