The deaths of two Jay County men whose badly decomposed bodies were discovered Wednesday are still under investigation.
Jay County Prosecutor Wes Schemenaur this morning declined to confirm that the case is being treated as a homicide.
“It’s under investigation,” Schemenaur said. “We’ll know more when the autopsy results come back.”
The bodies, found about noon Wednesday in a rental property at 328 N. 700 East in Noble Township, are believed to be those of Wayne and Zane Burroughs, 69-year-old twins who were the last known tenants of the property.
Schemenaur said that wallets and identification papers for the Burroughs brothers were found at the scene.
“Probably we’ll know in a couple of days on one of them,” he said. One of the brothers had a medical device which could aid in confirming identification.
Schemenaur said it could be another four to six weeks before complete autopsy results are available. Meanwhile, Indiana State Police, Jay County Sheriff’s Office, the Jay County Coroner and Schemenaur’s office are working together to gather as much information as possible.
“We’re just gathering information,” said Schemenaur. “We’re trying to establish when they were seen last and who may have had contact with them.”
He asked that anyone with information contact his office or police.
Earlier reports indicated that the brothers had not been seen since late August.
The bodies were found in the living room of the home, an old brick structure with a frame addition at the back.
Schemenaur said authorities have not yet begun conducting interviews or identifying any potential suspects.
