The Patriots are on a roll.
Jay County High School senior cheerleader Renee Omstead has been named to the Indiana All-State Cheer Team.
This marks the third year in a row that JCHS has had a cheerleader earn all-state recognition.
“I was not expecting that whatsoever,” said Omstead. “It’s really cool that I got it.”
Omstead is the fourth Patriot to earn the all-state honor, following former squad-mates Breea Liette and Sydnee Lee in 2017 and Dara Grove last year.
“I think we all have the same mindset of wanting to be our best,” said Omstead of that run of success.
“We have girls who are very dedicated and very motivated,” agreed JCHS coach Cheree McCallister.
“Renee is an all-around exceptional cheerleader,” she added. “She’s got a phenomenal personality and attitude. She’s an excellent leader with the younger girls coming into the program. …
“Her determination is incredible. She pushes and pushes herself … and she strives for perfection always.”

Omstead was a freshman on the Jay County squad that finished seventh in the medium varsity Division II Universal Cheerleaders Association national championships in Orlando, Florida, in 2017. The Patriots were also national qualifiers during her sophomore season when they finished 13th. They placed fifth in the Indiana Cheer Championship a year ago.
A panel of judges selects the all-state team based on submissions of a one-minute video — 30 seconds of cheer and 30 seconds of dance — in which the cheerleaders are asked to show off as many of their skills as possible.
Omstead especially focused on her triple jump tuck.
“I definitely tried to show off my best skills that I have,” she said.
“When she was performing her routine for the all-state (video), she did not stop doing that routine until she was sticking every landing and not making any mistakes through the whole thing,” added McCallister.
Omstead will be honored at the Indiana Cheer Championship State Finals on Nov. 9 at New Castle. She will perform a routine with the other all-state honorees — the group features cheerleaders from Pendleton Heights, Carmel, Silver Creek, Fishers, New Albany, Charlestown, New Washington, Lake Central and Mount Vernon — and demonstrate her individual jumping and/or tumbling skills.
