James Sumner
April 9, 1930-Oct. 14, 2019
James E. Sumner, 89, of Redkey, Indiana, passed away peacefully Monday, Oct. 14, 2019, while in the company of family members at Albany Health Care & Rehabilitation Center in Albany, Indiana.
James was born in Scuddy, Kentucky, on April 9, 1930, a son of the late Amanda (Jent) and Andrew Jackson Sumner. He is the widower of Lula A. (Birchwell) Sumner who he happily married on March 2, 1963, and sadly lost on April 19, 2018.
James attended Logwood School in Viper, Kentucky, was a member of Faith Evangelical Church and retired from Norfolk & Western Railroad in the late 1980s. He loved hunting, fishing, music, singing, gardening, traveling and watching Westerns, court shows and wrestling.
In his younger days, James enjoyed horseback riding, collecting trains, clowns figurines and refinishing furniture. James was a social and kindhearted man who liked to tease people and was often caught singing to the many residents at Albany Health Care.
He is survived by four daughters, Elaine (Wilson) Lewis (husband: Delbert), Gwendla (Wilson) Anderson (husband: Robert), Betsy (Wilson) Craig (husband: Duane) and Carrie (Wilson) Hambrock (husband: Rick); and daughter-in-law Paulette Wilson. James is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded by his parents; loving wife Lula; and two sons, Arnold Wilson and Paul Vernon Sumner.
Friends are invited to call Saturday, Oct. 19, 2019, from 10 to 11 a.m. at MJS Mortuaries – Redkey Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. with Pastor Justin Simos officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Muncie, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Heart to Heart Hospice.
Arrangements have been entrusted to MJS Mortuaries.
