The Patriots couldn’t shake the Starfires for nearly 32 minutes.

Three goals in the final eight minutes of the opening half gave them some cushion.

The sky opened up and halted perhaps any further damage.

Gabi Bilbrey netted a hat trick, including two goals in the span of 125 seconds, as the Jay County High School girls soccer team built a 6-2 advantage Tuesday against the South Adams Starfires before the game was halted because of thunderstorms.

IHSAA rules state a game can be deemed final after one half of play, but it was confirmed to The Commercial Review this morning the game will not end as such. Allen County Athletic Conference bylaws state the contest will be resumed at a later date, which has not yet been determined.

Bilbrey, who notched the second hat trick of her career, opened the scoring for Jay County (3-2, 2-0 ACAC), which has won four straight conference championships, in the eighth minute. Anhely Montes sent a through pass and Bilbrey raced past a Starfire defender before beating SAHS goalkeeper Aubri Gerber for the goal.

Mackynzie Fairchild notched her second goal of the season on an assist from Mara Bader to make it 2-0 about 10 minutes later.

South Adams (2-2, 0-0 ACAC) cut the deficit to 2-1 on a booming kick by Macie Hirschy from almost 30 yards out.

In the 26th minute, Bilbrey took a shot off an Eliza Bader corner kick but Gerber turned it away. The rebound bounced to Mara Bader, who finished for a 3-1 Jay County advantage.

Less than a minute later, Ali Smith raced past the JCHS defense and scored a goal to make it 3-2.

Although the Starfires were able to quickly respond with their two goals, the Patriots began to pull away with three goals in less than eight minutes.

Payton McCoy tallied her third goal of the season with 8:10 before half. Bilbrey notched her second of the night with 2:42 to play and completed the hat trick with 37 seconds to go.

Just before half, rain began to fall, followed by thunder and lightning. About 15 minutes later the game was halted.
