SELMA — The Patriots had already knocked off one state-ranked team this season.
They weren’t able to make it two in a row.
Jay County High School’s volleyball team lost to Class 2A No. 2 Wapahani on Thursday, 25-14, 25-12, 25-15.
It marked back-to-back losses for the Patriots (5-2), who fell in four sets to state-line rival Fort Recovery on Tuesday.
Alana Kunkler led Jay County on both sides of the net as she totaled six kills and five blocks. Hallie Fields and Natalie Miles collected nine and seven digs, respectively. Pacie Denney set up her teammates to the tune of 11 assists.
Jay County’s junior varsity team also lost, 25-18, 25-8. Ralyn Chaffins collected 13 digs, while Lilly Hedges and Madison Brunswick finished with three kills each.
Late goal lifts Jay
Anhely Montes converted a penalty kick in the 76th minute Thursday, lifting the Jay County girls soccer team to a 2-1 victory against the Norwell Knights.
Payton McCoy scored in the first half for Jay County (4-2), as the Patriots went into halftime knotted at 1-1 with the Knights.
It was the third goal of the season for both McCoy and Montes.
Tricia Ison turned away eight Norwell shots.
Patriots shut out Knights
OSSIAN — Jay County’s boys soccer team moved to 3-2 on the season Thursday with a 1-0 triumph over the host Norwell Knights.
Cristian Marentes scored the lone goal for the Patriots, marking the fifth consecutive contest in which he’s found the back of the net.
Ian Ruiz, a sophomore goalkeeper, turned away 14 shots to mark his second shutout of the season.
Jay County’s junior varsity team lost 1-0, and fell to 1-1-1 on the year.
Chiefs beat Driver
WINCHESTER — The East Jay Middle School seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams both defeated host Driver on Thursday.
The eighth grade squad won 25-15, 25-10, and the seventh grade team grabbed a 25-17, 25-9 victory.
Brenna Haines paced the eighth grade team with nine service points, including seven aces. Sophie Saxman and Bella Denton had seven and six points, respectively. Riah Champ and Denton finished with three kills each.
Jaelynn Lykins totaled two kills and two aces for the EJMS seventh graders. Jasmine Meredith Dirksen and Jasmine Esparza had five and four aces, respectively.
