The Patriots reached paydirt in the fourth quarter to avoid getting shut out for the third time this season.
But that only came after the second-ranked team in Class 1A had been in the end zone seven times.
After a methodical opening period, the Adams Central Jets scored four second-quarter touchdowns — two of them went for more than 60 yards — as they handed the Jay County Patriots a 46-6 defeat.
“They’ve almost become Delta,” said JCHS coach Tim Millspaugh. The Jets have won at least nine games in each of the last four seasons, including sectional and regional championships a year ago. “It’s that team that’s just a program and it’s a huge deal to the community. … (Coach) Michael Mosser is a top-notch guy.”
The Patriots (0-4, 0-2 ACAC) were heading toward a possible third shutout — they dropped the opener 47-0 to Norwell and the second game 56-0 to Huntington North — before a big play of their own got them in scoring position against Adams Central’s reserve defenders in the fourth quarter.
Bailey Cox went up the middle and then shifted to the left sideline for a 49-yard run down to the Adams Central 16. Three plays later, on third-and-9, quarterback Sam Dunlavy rolled out to his right, kept running and then cut inside at the numbers to score his first career touchdown with 8:43 to play.
But most of the game belonged to Adams Central (4-0, 1-0 Allen County Athletic Conference), which went up 7-0 in the first quarter using its methodical rushing offense. After adding a second touchdown on the ground early in the second quarter, the Jets opened it up as senior quarterback Dallas Schwaller struck for touchdown passes of 66 yards to Joshua Mosser and 64 yards to Nick Neuenschwander.
Those long TDs were sandwiched around a defensive score — Joseph Collier stepped in front of an attempted Sam Dunlavy swing pass and took it 35 yards to the house — as Adams Central took a 33-0 lead into halftime.
“We have those in our arsenal,” said Mosser, who is in his 11th season leading the Jets. “We like to keep them in our pocket and use them when we feel that they’re least expected. Sometimes they work. Sometimes they don’t. And they worked tonight.”
Adams Central tacked on touchdowns of 3 and 15 yards by Mason DeRoo in the third quarter before the Patriots finally escaped the shutout.
DeRoo led a group of four running backs with six or more carries, all of whom averaged at least 6 yards per rush. He totaled 93 yards on 10 attempts while Blake Heyerly ran for 54 yards on nine tries. Alex Currie and Dalton Gerber ran six times apiece for 52 and 38 yards, respectively.
Schwaller totaled 150 yards on just three completions.
Cox, who ran for 156 yards and two touchdowns in last week’s loss to Southern Wells, toted the ball 15 times for 92 yards for Jay County on Friday night. Rylee Huftel picked up 20 yards on three carries.
