The Bruins were one of the Patriots’ victims en route to an invitational title last month.

This time the Bruins put up a little more of a fight.

Jay County High School’s boys tennis team had two matches go the distance but prevailed nonetheless in a 4-1 victory against the Blackford Bruins on Monday.

“(We) didn’t play (our) best tennis of the year, but gutted some tough victories,” said JCHS coach Scott Miller, whose team improved to 5-3 on the season.

Christian Romero, a senior playing No. 3 singles, had one of those tough victories against Landon Rogers. Romero was leading the first set 5-2 before dropping the next two games. Romero ended up preventing Rogers, a freshman, from putting together a winning streak to nab the set 6-4.

Rogers rebounded to win the second set 6-3 but wasn’t able to keep the momentum going as he was shut out in the third. Romero got the win 6-4, 3-6, 6-0.

At No. 2 doubles, junior Frankie Crump and sophomore Darius Esparza had a battle in the first set, eventually winning 7-6 (7-2). Many of their mistakes were self-inflicted, either hitting return shots long or firing slams into the net. Crump and Esparza won the second set 6-2 and the match against Jace Keplinger and Gavin Wolfgang.

Jay County’s No. 1 doubles team of senior Sheldon Upp and sophomore Gavin Myers defeated Josiah Shafer and Damon Thompson 6-0, 6-2.

Freshman Simon Dirksen was hardly challenged in his No. 2 singles match with Jacob Ludwig. Dirksen, playing in that position for the first time this season, knocked off Ludwig 6-1, 6-1.

Crosby Heniser, a sophomore, needed three sets to beat Straton Stone when they met during the Muncie Central Invitational on Aug. 31.

This time around it went three sets again, and it was a dogfight throughout. On one point in the opening set, Stone, a senior, sent a cross court shot that had Heniser sprinting toward his right along the baseline. The lefty dived for the ball to keep it in play. Two more volleys later Stone hit the ball wide.

Heniser won the opening set 6-4 but lost the final two, both by a 6-3 margin.

“Crosby continues to impress me with his drive and his relentless nature on the court,” Miller said. “Even when the score isn’t in his favor he fights for every point.”

In junior varsity action, freshman Austin Dirksen defeated Dominic Fortino 6-1. Sophomores Lucas Lyons and Konner Sommers teamed to beat Nick Thornburgh and Fortino 8-0.
