There is a new opportunity to help support local hospital initiatives.
Indiana University Health Foundation has awarded a grant to match donations through the end of 2019 to two IU Health Jay initiatives up to a total of $10,000.
“The IU Health Foundation, really the reason for our existence is to provide philanthropic support for our 17 hospitals,” said IU Health Foundation chief development officer Nicholas Oyler. “IU Health Jay is one of those communities, so we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to influence philanthropic activity in that community with matching funds.”
Jay County Hospital’s integration into IU Health in early 2018 included a variety of changes, including for the facility’s philanthropic arm.
Jay County Hospital Foundation funds were transferred to The Portland Foundation to keep them under local control. Then, last fall, IU Health Jay became linked with the IU Health Foundation.
The foundation, based in Indianapolis, handles overall philanthropic fundraising for IU Health, with branches dedicated to each of its hospitals. The current matching grant was provided to specifically bolster two funds — the Sharon Tobe Memorial Nursing Scholarship or IU Health Jay Area of Greatest Need — in support of IU Health Jay.
The Tobe scholarship was established in honor of Sharon Tobe, a longtime nurse at Jay County Hospital who was the manager of the emergency department at the time of her death. Its scholarships support students from Jay and Mercer counties who are pursuing a nursing degree.

Vicki Delzeith, who is in charge of marketing and foundation for IU Health Jay and IU Health Blackford, noted the goal of building up the Tobe scholarship fund to a level that would allow it to be endowed in order to ensure its existence for the long term.
“The Sharon Tobe Memorial Nursing Scholarship Fund is an important way for us to invest in the future workforce for IU Health Jay,” added Dave Hyatt, who oversees IU Health Jay and IU Health Blackford hospitals as critical access hospital president for IU Health’s east-central region. “Nurses are critical to the hospital’s operations and the more we can do to support our team members and non-team members who are in nursing school to make that educational process easier so that they can stay local and provide great care to our patients in the future is very important to the hospital.”
The IU Health Jay Area of Greatest Need fund provides hospital leadership with flexibility to handle projects that might not otherwise be in the budget, he added.
“If there’s a need for something, that would be a fund that we could go to, a resource to help fund things that are needed that wouldn’t necessarily be a capital expenditure that would come out of the hospital budget,” said Delzeith.
Jay County Hospital Foundation had a similar fund prior to the integration with IU Health. Money from that fund was used toward the hospital’s cancer center, cardiac monitors, car seats for newborns and scholarships for local students, among other initiatives.
The IU Health Jay Foundation is already more than halfway to the $10,000 fundraising goal to earn all of the match dollars thanks mostly to a $5,000 grant from The Portland Foundation through the Betty Starbuck Endowment.
Those interested in donating can do so online at iuhealthfoundation.org/donate. Once on that website, choose “IU Health Jay Hospital” from the drop-down menu. Donors can then select the amount of their contribution and direct it to either the Sharon Tobe Memorial Nursing Scholarship or IU Health Jay Area of Greatest Need. Donations can also be sent to Delzeith at 500 W. Votaw St., Portland, IN 47371.
The funds being targeted were selected with the help of IU Health Jay’s philanthropy council, which is made up of Phil Laux, Annette Alexander, Trent Paxson, Dave Littler, Hyatt and Delzeith.
