COVID-19 was never part of the business plan.

But Brooks Fugiett wasn’t going to let a little thing like a pandemic prevent him from opening his new store in Redkey.

Citadel Supply, a “hybrid store” carrying hardware and construction supplies as well as some auto and farm products, will open Saturday, April 18.

A real grand opening celebration will be scheduled later this summer after the pandemic has passed.

The store, said Fugiett, arose out of need.

Fugiett’s core business, Mid-States Construction, which works on projects within about a 20-mile radius of Redkey, was spending way too much time driving to distant locations for construction materials.

“It really has become a brainchild of necessity,” said Fugiett.

Mid-States is now headquartered in the former MainSource Bank building on Indiana 67, and Fugiett had also acquired the former Will’s IGA building that is now leased to Valentine Feed and Supply. When the former Dollar General building adjacent to Valentine became available, it only made sense to acquire that for the new retail outlet.

After about six months of talk and four or five months of planning, Fugiett and Mark Valentine decided to move ahead with Citadel Supply.

Valentine will provide management of the retail outlet through Mark Valentine and Associates, and the side-by-side businesses will complement one another rather than compete.

“Our store is livestock and pets,” said Valentine, who will have been in operation in Redkey one year at the end of April, having moved the store from Portland.

The new store will carry plumbing and electrical items as well as some lawn and garden products. It will not, however, be a lumberyard.

“Everybody’s going to be cross-trained,” Valentine said of the management strategy.

The store’s name will match the name of Fugiett’s land corporation for his farming operation and was chosen because it represents strength.

Fugiett said there had been overtures from other communities to have Mid-States relocate but those were rejected.

“I’m a Redkey kid,” he said.

While COVID-19 has complicated things, it hasn’t dampened his enthusiasm for the new project.

“We’re excited to get the doors open,” said Fugiett.
