Couple arrested for son's death
Three-month old boy died of acute methamphetamine intoxication last month
A Portland couple has been arrested in connection with their son’s death.
Ryan A. Markle and Jennifer F. Young of Portland were arrested today, each charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death, a Level 1 felony.
Their son, 3-month-old Hayden Markle, died March 6.
According to a press release from Jay County Prosecutor Wes Schemenaur, an autopsy found the cause of his death to be acute methamphetamine intoxication.
An initial hearing for the couple is expected to be held this week, though a specific time has not yet been set.
In addition to the neglect of a dependent resulting in death charge, both are charged with possession of methamphetamine, a Level 5 felony, and possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.
They are both being held in Jay County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
According to the press release, Jay Emergency Medical Service and Portland Police Department were called March 6 to an upstairs apartment at 221 S. Meridian St., Portland, regarding a 3-month old child who was not breathing. Hayden Markle was transported to IU Health Jay, where he was pronounced dead about an hour and a half later.
An investigation into Hayden Markle’s death was opened immediately, Schemenaur said.
“Any time there’s a death of a young child like that, obviously that prompts a call to the Department of Child Services,” he added. “They get involved, and then law enforcement gets involved at that point.”
Indiana State Police, Jay County Coroner’s Office and Jay County Prosecutor’s Office were involved in the investigation in addition to Portland police and DCS.
A probable cause affidavit has not yet been filed in connection with the case. It is expected to be filed no later than Friday.
In Indiana, Level 1 felony charges carry a sentence of 20 to 40 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.
Court documents show both Ryan Markle and Jennifer Young have been found guilty of dealing in methamphetamine in the past.
Ryan Markle pleaded guilty to a Class B felony charge of dealing in methamphetamine in 2013. He also pleaded guilty to a Class D felony operating a vehicle while intoxicated charge in 2004. He was charged with neglect of a dependent, a Level 6 felony, in 2016, but that charge was later dismissed.
Young pleaded guilty to dealing in methamphetamine, a Class A felony, along with two Class D felony counts of neglect of a dependent, in 2013. She was also charged with a Level 6 felony for unlawful possession of a syringe in 2017, but that charge was later dismissed.
