The City of Dunkirk is planning to repave six roads this year after being awarded a state grant.
Dunkirk Board of Works and Public Safety heard Thursday that the city received a Community Crossings grant from Indiana Department of Transportation.
The grant will cover 75% of the expenses of the project, with the city on the hook for the remaining portion. Choice One Engineering estimated the project would cost $388,280; with the state covering $291,210, the city will be responsible for $97,070.
The plans include repaving Center Street from Broad Street to the Dunkirk Moose Lodge lot; North Street between Meridian and Broad streets; Railroad Street from Main Street to Broad Street; Chestnut Street from Main Street to the dead end; Indiana Street between Ohio and Center streets and between Railroad Street to Grand Street; and Franklin Street between Lincoln and Oak streets. The Franklin Street work also includes replacing sidewalks and installing curb ramps.
The board signed a contract with INDOT agreeing to pay its portion of the cost. Choice One will prepare the specifications for bids, with the work planned to begin later this year.
Also approved Thursday was the purchase of six new Beretta M9A1s for Dunkirk Police Department for $509 each from McGalliard Guns & More of Muncie. The department will trade in its current Glock 22s for $250 each and five Smith & Wesson SW99s for $100 each, bringing the total cost for the city down to $1,304.
In other business, board members Dan Watson, Lisa Street and Dunkirk Mayor Jack Robbins:
•Approved the chemical cleaning of a well at the water plant. An estimate for the work, which will be done by Peerless Midwest, Inc., was not available.
•Approved work on an emergency generator at the wastewater treatment plant by MacCallister Machinery for a cost not to exceed $9,000.
•Paid $2,611.46 to Stu’s Garage for mechanical work on one of the city’s dump trucks.
