Police searching for Jones
Dunkirk man is a ‘person of interest’ in connection to fatal shooting Saturday
Police are continuing to look for a rural Dunkirk man wanted in connection with a fatal shooting.
Cory M. Jones, 43, is being sought as a “person of interest” in the shooting death of Shanna Jones, 47. He is considered armed and dangerous, according to a Sunday press release from Jay County prosecutor Wes Schemenaur.
This morning, Schemenaur said police — Indiana State Police is assisting Jay County Sheriff’s Office in the investigation — are still looking for Cory Jones and thus far have no indication of where he might be. He is believed to be driving a dark-colored Dodge truck. Anyone with information should call Jay County Sheriff’s Office at (260) 726-8188.
“He is likely to be armed,” said Schemenaur. “It’s not a good idea to approach somebody like that.”
Shanna Jones was found dead Saturday at 10402 W. 400 South, rural Dunkirk, in the house she shared with Cory Jones. Her body was discovered when Jay County Sheriff’s Office responded to the address for a welfare check just before midnight Saturday. The check came after a call from a concerned family member, Schemenaur said.
The press release noted that preliminary indications are that Shanna Jones died from a shotgun wound to the head, though Schemenaur said it was not yet clear if it was a single shot or what kind of gun was used. No weapon was found at the scene.
An autopsy is expected to be completed today.
“We hope to maybe have a few more answers,” said Schemenaur. “We don’t know exactly the type of gun that we’re looking for.”
According to court documents, Cory Jones pleaded guilty to a Class A misdemeanor charge of battery resulting in bodily injury in 2008. He also has been found guilty or pleaded guilty to felony charges of burglary (1994) and auto theft (2014).
