Local organizations and teachers have been awarded scholarships and grants totaling nearly $165,000.

The Portland Foundation on Wednesday announced the approval of scholarships totaling $162,580 and an additional $2,305.81 in Teacher Creativity Mini Grants.

The largest of the scholarships is the Fred M. and Elizabeth L. (Hudson) Stultz Scholarship that went to Deanna Chenoweth and Lizzy Schoenlein for $5,000 each. The scholarship goes to college juniors and seniors who are pursuing a degree in agriculture or veterinary science.

Dr. Ara C. and Gay B. Badders Medical Scholarships of $3,200 each went to Abbi Dunlavy, Liza Haggenjos, Kellie Fortkamp, Randy Fortkamp and Kathryn Smeltzer. They are awarded to JCHS graduates majoring in a doctoral medical program.

Receiving Jerry R. Pierce Memorial Scholarships of $2,650 for employees and descendants of employees of W & M Manufacturing, Pier-Mac Plastics and Accelerated Curing were Ashlee Brumbaugh, Kyleigh DeLong, Kahlee Dowler, Aaron Foster, Kaitlyn Hicks, Chase McFarland, Jacob Pesek and Taylen Reedy.

Deanna Chenoweth, Gwyneth Harris, Erika Kunkler, Tyler Leonhard, Julia McClung, Lillian McClung, Kendra Muhlenkamp, Bowen Runyon, Jordan Stultz and Cherie Walter received $1,500 Alwyn Carder Scholarships for college juniors or seniors majoring in architecture, history or education.

A Martha Catharine Rockwell Music Scholarship of $1,420 for juniors or seniors majoring in a music-related degree and enrolled at a Christian college went to Jamie Valentine.

Also awarded were the following $1,400 scholarships:

•Clifford and Nancy Ball Scholarship for JCHS graduates in a master’s or non-medical doctoral program — Alli Campbell, Lindsey Green and Emily Jobe

•Orla and Ruth Tharp Education Scholarship for JCHS graduates enrolled in a master’s program or a non-medical doctoral program — Tiffany Barton and Travis Barton.

Additional scholarships went to Daniel Bracy, Gwyneth Harris and Lizzy Schoenlein for $1,300, Alayna Aparicio, Irene Braun and Audrey Dirksen for $1,200 and Vivienne Kunkler for $1,100

•Weldon and Dorothy Hamma Memorial Scholarship for non-traditional students pursing post-secondary education — Angela Stephens. Additional $1,000 scholarships went to Alayna Aparicio, Daniel Bracy, Irene Braun, Ashlee Brumbaugh, Audrey Dirksen, Jacob Geesaman, Lillian McClung, Elizabeth McDowell, Emily Muhlenkamp, Ethan Myers, John Paquette, Taylen Reedy, Emily Reier, Andrew Simmons, Brittani Snell, Cole Stigleman, Katelyn Theurer, Ethan Theurer, Evan VanCise, Jennifer Walter, Kiara Walter and Kelsie Walter.

Julia McClung and Cherie Walter received $1,100 Joyce A. Horn Scholarships for college juniors or seniors majoring in elementary education.

Earning $1,000 Elizabeth Starbuck II Scholarships for JCHS graduates who are sophomores, juniors or seniors in college were Alexa Barrett, Matthew Blackford, Deanna Chenoweth, Riley Claycomb, Conner Davis, Kayla Dirksen, Mitchel Frasher, Daniel Fugiett, Collin Haines, Dylan Harris, Klarisa Hemmelgarn, Noah Hummel, Olivia Kunkler, Erika Kunkler, Riley Leavell, Breea Liette, Briana Muhlenkamp, Kendra Muhlenkamp, Xavier Ninde, Michael Schlechty, Ivan Smeltzer, Angela Stephens and Jamie Valentine.

Receiving $1,000 Haynes Starbuck II Scholarships for JCHS graduates who are sophomores, juniors or seniors in college were Storm Armstrong, Ashlee Brumbaugh, Kaitlyn Dow, Jacob Geesaman, Wyatt Geesaman, Joseph Hilty, Vivienne Kunkler, Tyler Leonhard, Julia McClung, Lillian McClung, Elizabeth McDowell, John Paquette, Matthew Paquette, Taylen Reedy, Bowen Runyon, Ryan Schlechty, Cole Stigleman, Jordan Stultz, Evan VanCise, Cherie Walter, Jennifer Walter, Kiara Walter and Kelsie Walter.

Other scholarships are as follows: Richard L. and Loretta E. (Larry) Zeigler Memorial Scholarship for Jay County residents in their junior year of college or higher ($855) – Deanna Chenoweth and Julia McClung; Janet B. Arnold Memorial Scholarship for JCHS gradutes who are juniors in college or higher and majoring in elementary education ($500 and $250, respectively) – Cherie Walter and Julia McClung; Charles & Ruth Joos Scholarship for Jay County residents entering their sophomore, junior or senior year of college ($500) – Storm Armstrong, Alexa Barrett, Kaitlyn Dow, Mitchel Frasher, Daniel Fugiett, Wyatt Geesaman, Joseph Hilty, Olivia Kunkler, Vivienne Kunkler, Riley Leavell, Xavier Ninde, Matthew Paquette, Michael Schlechty, Ryan Schlechty and Ivan Smeltzer; Altrusa Club of Portland Scholarship for a Jay County resident who is a non-traditional student ($400) – Amber McClain; Marseal T. Deweerd, Edith T. Horn and Virgie M. Brady Memorial Scholarship for Jay County residents entering their junior or senior year of college ($250) – Cherie Walter, Jennifer Walter, Kiara Walter and Kelsie Walter; Ruth Whipple Badders Scholarship for a Jay County resident who is a junior or senior in college and majoring in elementary education ($250) – Kendra Muhlenkamp; and the Dr. Glade and Joyce McAfee Memorial Scholarship to a Jay County resident enroled in a doctoral program in optometry or a certified registered nurse anesthetist program ($150) – Randy Fortkamp.

Teacher Creativity Mini Grants of $300 or less help teachers cover costs of learning experiences they feel are important to their students but fall outside of the school budget. It is funded through the Virgil and Josephine Thomas Educational Fund.

Grants of $300 went to Holly Farr (Westlawn Elementary) for a laminator and a website subscription, LaVetha Loucks (elementary music) for hand and finger puppets and materials related to music through play, Beth Mathewson (East Jay Elementary) for two Kore Pre-Teen Wobble Chairs and an adjustable-height mobile laptop work station; and Tavia Price (Jay County Junior-Senior High School) for copies of Ray Bradbury’s “The Veldt.”

Additional grants went to Jennifer Johnson (Westlawn) for $294.61 for a mini laminator, picture books and a website subscription, Gina Brockman (junior-senior high) for $291.20 for a wireless drawing tablet and double-sided white board with coordinate grids, and Jenelle Kirby (Westlawn) for $220 for website subscriptions.

The next deadline to apply for the mini grants is Jan. 8.
