Missouri man was killed in collision

Aubrey was on foot when he was struck by a semi

A Missouri man died after being struck by a semi Saturday night in Jackson Township.

Jeremy R. Aubrey, 32, Polo, Missouri, was on foot traveling south on county road 375 West and continued into the intersection with Indiana 18, where he was struck by a semi driven by Jeffrey A. Banter, 56, Hartford City. Aubrey was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

According to a Jay County Sheriff’s Office report, Banter said he was driving west on Indiana 18 just after 10 p.m. Saturday when he saw someone running south on county road 375 West. Banter told police the individual looked at him, hesitated, waved and then ran in front of his semi. Banter said he tried to stop but could not avoid striking the individual, later identified as Aubrey, with the 2017 Kenworth T660 he was driving.

Aubrey and his friends — Lexi Rines, Christina Montross, Allen Clamme, Sarah Paxson and Justin Penrod — had been riding south on county road 375 West on a mule-drawn wagon operated by Harry Caylor, they told police. The sheriff’s office report indicates all of the friends said Aubrey had been riding with them and had been drinking. They said he was sitting on the rear of the wagon and they did not realize he was no longer riding with them until they completed their route, began heading north again and reached Indiana 18.

The semi Banter was driving is registered to First Fleet Inc. of Bluffton. The wagon is owned by B N B Farms’ Gerald Burkholder.

Damage to the semi was estimated between $50,000 to $100,000.
