The Patriots dropped the season opener to Hamilton Southeastern on Nov. 19.

They haven’t lost since.

The Broncos, Bruins and Giants were the latest three squads to feel their wrath on the wrestling mat.

Jay County High School’s wrestling team pushed its winning streak to 18 consecutive dual matches by beating all three opponents in a triple dual it hosted Saturday.

“We’ve got a lot of solid kids without any quit in them,” said JCHS coach Eric Myers, whose team is ranked fifth in Class 2A by IndianaMat. “If one guy has a tough match and gets tripped up a little bit there’s someone there to pick him up. That’s how we’ve had success dual meet wise.

“Today probably wasn’t our best day. We didn’t come out wrestling as well as we could have in that first match against Daleville. That’s kind of the thing; we’ve wrestled pretty well up until this point and I think that will be a focus of things we can work on going forward.”

Jay County, which on Sunday learned it had been invited to the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association team state duals on Jan. 2 at Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, defeated Daleville 43-20 in the first match of the day then cruised past Northrop 77-6. It capped the morning with a 61-18 triumph over Marion.

The Patriots, who host a six-team super dual at 9 a.m. Wednesday, had half of their 14 wrestlers end the day with a perfect record.

Freshman Cody Rowles earned two first-period pins and a forfeit at 106 pounds as he moved to 18-0 on the season. At 113, Taye Curtis also had a pair of pins and a forfeit as he improved to 11-0 as the only other undefeated Patriot with double digit matches under their belt.

Ethan Reiley, who is ranked 14th in the state at 113 pounds, also went 3-0 Saturday, getting a 10-6 decision, a 16-1 tech fall and a forfeit as the 2020 state qualifier improved to 17-1.

Cameron Clark (132), Ian Ruiz (145), Blake Pruett (160) and Ramon Bravo (195) were all undefeated as well. Clark moved to 11-1, Ruiz is 14-4, Pruett is 8-4 and Bravo is 16-1.

Tony Wood, a freshman who is ranked 13th at 120 pounds, was 2-1 at 126 Saturday.

After dropping his first match of the morning, he received a forfeit, then won by major decision, 11-2, to move to 16-3.

RJ Heskett (138), Cameron Gage (152), Nate Paxson (170) and Bryce Wenk (182) were all 2-1 on the day. Heskett, Gage and Wenk rebounded from losses in their first matches to end the day on a high note. Wenk, a freshman, outlasted Ja’Kwan Williams of Marion for a 9-8 decision to cap his day.

“He works so hard,” Myers said. “He’s improved tremendously this year. As a freshman sometimes it’s difficult for a kid that’s in the upper weights to get acclimated. He’s thrived in the environment of a high school wrestling room.

“He’s wrestling against kids that are upperclassmen that have made it to regional and semi-state and he’s giving them everything they want if not beating them. I think Bryce is a great person for those young underclassmen to say, ‘Hey, we can compete with these older guys.’”

Jay County’s super dual Wednesday, which replaces the annual East Central Indiana Classic, includes Greenville (Ohio), Norwell, Monroe Central, Union City and Wes-Del.

“We’re just building, we’re rolling right now,” Myers said. “It was kind of, in a way, nice to get some things that we needed to refocus on today as we move forward, that way our guys don’t get too happy, don’t get too complacent.

Girls take third

MISHAWAKA — Jay County’s girls wrestling team took third out of 18 teams Saturday at the Penn Invitational.

The host Kingsmen scored 170 points to claim the team title. Columbia City was a distant second with 93 points, and Jay County scored 73 points for third.

Lita Chowning finished second at 120 pounds, while Lizzie Dollar was third at 106 pounds and Tricia Ison, who recorded the first pin and wins of her career, took third at 182 pounds.

Maddy Rinker (113) was fifth, Willow Hardy (113) was seventh and Lilly Lothridge (138) placed eighth.

Two named All-Stars

A pair of Jay County girls have been selected to participate in the inaugural Indiana Girls All-Star Meet.

Junior Lizzie Dollar and senior Maddy Rinker were selected as participants.

The Indiana High School Girls Wrestling Association will be hosting an All-Star dual featuring some of the top-ranked girls in the state at 7 p.m. Dec. 30 at Hamilton Heights. Dollar was selected as a 98-pound participant. IndianaMat has her as the top-ranked wrestler at that weight. Rinker, ranked No. 9, was selected at 113 pounds.

Dollar will square off against No. 2 Adriana Sanchez of Purdue Polytech, and Rinker will meet No. 3 Samera Henson of Hamilton Heights.
