A year ago, we decided that in addition to our annual list of top 10 stories of the year we’d also put together a package featuring our top 10 photos. To facilitate that process this year, editor and publisher Ray Cooney culled through the files, narrowing the list to 55 photos to be voted on by the staff. He then removed one of those photos, realizing it had been submitted rather than taken by anyone on The CR’s payroll.
As sports editor Chris Schanz looked through the remaining 54 photos, he asked why that particular photo wasn’t included. He, and the rest of the staff, agreed there was no shot that better captured the year that was 2020.
So, although we didn’t take it, this photo is the one we selected as the photo of the year. The expression on the face of Persimmon Ridge resident Mary Robbins and the reflections of her son Alan and granddaughter Tish Gierhart visiting from outside her window stuck with us, as we imagine it did many readers. We thank Melinda Hodgson of Persimmon Ridge for sharing it to run with Jack Ronald’s March 30 story about coronavirus pandemic-related restrictions at local long-term care facilities.
