Five Patriots picked up enough victories Saturday to advance to regional.
It will take one more this weekend to earn a trip to Fort Wayne.
Jay County High School will have three sectional champions and two others competing when it hosts the regional tournament beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
The top four in each weight class advance to the semi-state a week later at Allen County War Memorial Coliseum, meaning a first-round regional win will get the job done.
Undefeated 182-pounder Mason Winner (35-0), a three-time state medalist who is ranked second in the state, leads the group of Patriots. He will take on Yorktown freshman Jackson New (9-15) in the opening round, in which he can tie 2014 graduate Eric Hemmelgarn’s school record of 162 career wins. If successful, Winner can break the mark in the regional semifinal, where he would meet either
Blake Heyerly (33-5) of Adams Central or Camryn Comer (19-11) of Daleville.
Junior Zakk Atkins and freshman Ethan Reiley are Jay County’s other sectional champions after winning at 120 and 113 pounds, respectively.
Atkins (30-4) will also open his regional tournament against a Yorktown opponent as he takes on Lane Baird (9-15) in the 120-pound bracket. Potential semifinal opponents are Brandon Kinnick (21-5) of Daleville and Mason Myers (13-8) of Bellmont. The 120-pound bracket also features Delta’s 11th-ranked John Robinson (24-2), who Atkins could meet in the championship match.
Reiley (32-3) faces a first-round matchup against Winchester’s Trenton Ragon (20-17) at 113 pounds. If he wins, he would meet either Dawson Brooks (20-7) of Daleville or Karson Everett (20-11) of Bellmont in the semifinals.
Senior Cooper Jacks (19-12), a 220-pounder who rallied in his consolation match to finish third in the sectional, opens against Delta sectional runner-up Jordan Stigall (16-14). Likely to await him in the second round would be Norwell’s Cale Gray, who is ranked third in the state at 26-0.
Sophomore Ramon Bravo (17-18), a 195-pounder who finished fourth in the sectional, will begin his regional day against Yorktown’s Tyson Enis (25-5).
If he were to score the upset, he would either get No. 15 Christian Summersett of South Adams or Alex Franklin of Winchester in the second round. The bracket also features 13th-ranked Caden Friedt of Bellmont.
Others who will be competing at the Jay County regional this weekend who are ranked in the top 20 in the state are:
106 — No. 4 Isaac Ruble of Bellmont
126 — No. 12 Landon Bertsch of Bluffton and No. 14 Payne Blackburn of Delta
