Jay swimmers improve

Patriots finish ahead of seeds in six races

INDIANAPOLIS — The huge jumps needed to earn another day of swimming weren’t to be.

But the Patriots did make a habit of moving up.

Eliza Bader posted the top finish for Jay County High School during Friday’s preliminary round of the IHSAA Girls Swimming and Diving State Finals at the Indiana University Natatorium, placing 24th in the 100-yard butterfly.

The Patriots finished ahead of their seed in six of seven events.

Carmel earned No. 1 seeds in six out of the 11 swimming events heading into today’s competition. Zionsville was next with two top seeds. Diving preliminaries begin at 9 a.m., with swimming and diving finals to follow at 1 p.m.

Bader climbed from the No. 28 seed in the butterfly, improving upon her sectional time by 0.09 seconds for her 24th-place finish in 58.65 seconds. She was 29th in the state in the event last season.

Caitlin Marshal of Noblesville was 16th in 57.09.

The top 16 swimmers from Friday’s preliminaries advanced to compete in today’s championship and consolation finals.

“Her breakouts were phenomenal,” said JCHS coach Matt Slavik. “In every race she swam tonight, she was up either ahead or right with the inside lanes, which is pretty spectacular. … Her starts were a lot cleaner. Her walls were a lot cleaner. In general, she swam a race that was cleaner than she swam at sectional. Everything about it was spot on.”

Jay County’s biggest climb in any event came in the 200-yard freestyle relay where Mara Bader, Erica Hathaway, Ashlyn Dow and Eliza Bader soared six spots. Seeded second-to-last going into the meet, they sliced another second off of their sectional time to finish in 1 minute, 41.47 seconds, for 25th place.

“Both Ashlyn and Eliza dropped again in their splits,” Slavik said. “And then Erica Hathaway probably had the largest movement. So that was pretty significant in going out as a senior. That’s exactly what she wanted to do. So that was a great way to put an exclamation point on her career.”

Dow, a junior, also placed 25th in an individual event, climbing from her No. 28 seed in the 100 breaststroke. Her time of 1:07.61 was 0.37 seconds faster than at last week’s sectional meet.

The Patriot team of Rieley Brewster, Dow and the Bader sisters finished 28th with their time of 1:52.03 in the meet-opening 200 medley relay. They entered the meet seeded 29th.

Eliza Bader also climbed three places in the 50 freestyle to take 28th in 24.72.

Dow climbed two places in her other individual swim as her time of 52.23 in the 100 freestyle placed her 29th.

And freshman Mara Bader was 32nd in the 200 individual medley in 2:22.25.

“All things considered, it was a great night for us at the pool,” said Slavik. “I’m super proud of how we did.

“It’s a little intimidating when you look at some of these kids. … But they all responded really well.”
