A successful weekend of competition has Jay County Robotics headed for the state championship on March 7 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Teams competed this past weekend at Warsaw High School in the finale of the regular season. 

1193T (Kenny Carducci, Ashton Yowell and Landon Weaver) qualified 5th with a record of 5-1 and were semi finalists. 

1193R (Tyler Weesner, Corben Lugar, Elijah Stephens, Jesse Basham) qualified 17th with a record of 3-3 and were semi finalists. 

1193Z (Makayla Templeton, Aidan Garlinger, Jonathon Peterson) qualified 20th with a record of 2-4 and were quarter finalists in the tournament.  

All Jay CountyHigh School and Jay County middle school teams have qualified for their respective 2020 Indiana State Championship, a program first. 



Festive fiber

The 17th Annual Jay County Fiber Arts Festival on Friday, March 13, and Saturday, March 14, the Jay Community Center in Portland

Sponsored by the Jay County Visitor and Tourism Bureau, the two-day event will include over 30 vendors, classes, hands-on activities, style show, kids area and a variety of demonstrations. Homemade food is available both days.

Vendors will be offering all varieties of fibers, from the common to the exotic, including wool, mohair, angora, flax, alpaca, cotton, silk and even buffalo! Other related items will be for sale including sweater yarn, homemade soap, and equipment for all fiber crafting needs. Taking stage

The Harmony Players, a theatre troupe based in Jay County, will present “Charley’s Aunt” in collaboration with Arts Place on March 19 through 21.

Set in 1890s England, the comedy is family friendly.

Performances in Hall-Moser Theatre will be at 7:30 p.m. on March 19 through 21 and at 2 p.m. on March 22.

Finish up

A 5-way meet in the Eastern Indiana Academic League finally finished on Thursday.

The meet at Wapahani High School started on Feb. 5 but was interrupted by weather and didn’t wrap up until last week.

The math team finished in second place. Jackson Lyons won  an individual second place ribbon.

The English team also finished in second place. Ava Stockton earned an individual first place ribbon. The science team finished in fourth place.  

The fine arts team finished in  fourth place.

The social studies team earned a second place finish. Alex Ardizzone won an individual second place ribbon, and Liz Stewart won an individual third place ribbon.

The interdisciplinary team finished in second  place. 

The next competition will be the Academic Senior Super Bowl Invitational I hosted by the Eastern Indiana Academic League at Cowan High School on Monday, March 2, The entire league of 20 schools will compete in the invitational. 



Who is golden?

LifeStream Services is seeking nominees age 65 or older for the LifeStream Golden Hoosier Award. The public is encouraged to nominate those special volunteers who consistently go above and beyond.

Nominees must be age 65 or older and currently reside in Jay, Blackford, Delaware, Fayette, Franklin, Grant, Henry, Madison, Randolph, Rush, Union, or Wayne counties. The individual must have completed at least three years of volunteer experience after reaching 60 years of age, positively impacting members of the community, an organization, or faith-based organization through volunteer efforts.

Top 50 nominees and their guests will be honored April 30 in New Castle. The recipient of the 2020 award will be announced at that time and will then be nominated for the State of Indiana’s Golden Hoosier Award, which is the highest honor given to seniors in Indiana. Nominations are due no later than March 16 to Laura Bray, LifeStream’s Volunteer Services Administrator. A nomination form can be accessed by visiting www.lifestreaminc.org/goldenhoosier.
