Evidence doesn’t meet the standard
To the editor:
I would like to respectfully disagree with Jack Ronald’s claim in a recent editorial that impeaching President Donald Trump was the right thing to do.
While the Associated Press failed to mention it, every public witness called by the Democrat impeachment charade was forced to admit that they had no direct knowledge and/or evidence of an impeachable offense. All they actually had was the transcript of the call, the text of The National Defense Authorization Act that required Trump to investigate corruption before releasing military aid and U.S. Army Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman's statement that Trump told him "no quid pro quo.”
What is especially hypocritical is the video of former Vice President Joe Biden bragging about withholding a billion dollars of aid until the Ukraine fired the prosecutor investigating his son. But the Dems see nothing wrong about that.
The second charge is an even bigger joke. Every president in the last 50 years has withheld some documents and witnesses unless ordered by a court. But the Dems argue obstruction of Congress without bothering to follow the legal process.
What is especially hypocritical about this is Biden says he won't testify if subpoenaed by the Senate. But the Dems don't care just as it was no problem when former secretary of state Hillary Clinton destroyed 30,000 e-mails under subpoena.
Now Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi wants to pressure the Senate to do another witch hunt because they don't have anything to present except exculpatory evidence and inadmissible hearsay.
If they limit witnesses to the ones who testified in the house the trial will take about 10 minutes to acquit.
The hate-Trump Dems have lowered the threshold for impeachment to a totally partisan and penny-ante vote that only proves they don't like the results of the 2016 election. While Pelosi sanctimoniously claims the Constitution requires impeachment, she has totally undermined the intent of the Founders who never wanted impeachment to be an exercise of partisan power like this three-year impeachment in search of a crime. After a biased, unfair set of hearings, she wants to overturn the votes of 60 million Trump supporters by a vote of 230 Trump haters.
