Planetarium shows are free at BSU

The schedule of free shows at Charles W. Brown Planetarium at Ball State University has been announced

On Fridays and Saturdays in January, the program will be Undiscovered Worlds: The Search Beyond Our Sun.

It will explore the timeless question of whether other planets like Earth exist in the universe. It’s suitable for all ages 8 and over.

The show will be presented at 6:30 p.m. beginning this Friday and also on Fridays Jan. 17 and 24.

The same show will be presented at 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturdays Jan. 11, 18, and 25.



On list

Jocelyn Kaiser, Fort Recovery, was named to the Provost's List for the fall 2019 semester at Capital University in Bexley, Ohio.

To be named to the Provost's List, full-time, degree-seeking students must have achieved a grade point average of at least 3.70.



Performing

Pianist Phoenix Park-Kim and cellist Kristen Yeon-Ji Yun will perform at Arts Place on Saturday at 7:30 pm.

The two musicians form the classical duo known as Duo Dolce.

Kristen Yeon-Ji Yun is a graduate of Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University and studied with Janos Starker. Yeon-Ji Yun has won numerous competitions and performed in nine countries on three continents.

Phoenix Park-Kim is a professor of music at Indiana Wesleyan University. She has won top prizes at numerous national and international competitions, including first prize at the Miami Concerto Competition.

Tickets are in advance for $12 per student or $20 per adult, or at the door for $13 per student and $23 per adult.

Attend training

Two staff members from State of the Heart Care recently attended comprehensive bereavement skills training in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Taking part in the training were bereavement specialist Sarah Depoy and social services manager Erin Meyer.

Participants learned about grief and loss and how to better help patients, families, and the communities State of the Heart Care serves.



At Berne

The Swiss Village series “Saturday Night at the Village” will feature the Royer Brothers from 7 to 8 p.m. this Saturday.

The Royer brothers work together on a small dairy farm near Bryant and sing together as a quartet, performing mostly southern gospel style songs.

The event is free and open to the public.

Honors night

Senior Honors Night at Jay County High School has been set for May 4.

Anyone who would like to add an award or scholarship should contact the JCHS guidance office to get the necessary forms.

The deadline for adding new awards and scholarships is Feb. 5.



2020 20s

Mark your calendar for Feb. 29.

Jay County Public Library is planning its first-ever Roaring 20s part to kick off the year 2020.

The dry event will feature live music, games, a 1920s costume contest and refreshments.

Tickets are free, and the event is open to anyone in high school or older.



Arts funded

The Indiana Arts Commission has announced approval of 72 projects for the 2020 Arts in the Parks and Historic Sites program, including $3,000 to Arts Place to hold summer art enrichment classes at the home of Gene Stratton Porter at the Limberlost Historic Site.

The program is being made possible through a partnership with Indiana State Parks and Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites.

Arts in the Parks at the Limberlost will start in June through the end of July for children ages 6-12. Class registration fees are $5 per class with a $30 maximum per student. Scholarships are available for those with financial need.

Busy schedule

Plenty of activities are on the calendar for January at the Jay County Public Library.

On Thursday, Jan. 9, from 3 to 7 p.m. folks are invited to try their hands as a Lego builder. The movie “Abominable” will be shown at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 10.

You can learn how to crochet a scarf at a workshop at 6 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 13. It’s free and there’s no need to register.

Wednesday, Jan. 15, it will be “Crafternoon for Kids” time again. This time children will be creating snowmen from 4 to 6 p.m. The event is freee, but all children must be accompanied by an adult.

If your New Year’s resolutions are already fractured, you can attend a family M&M tasting at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22.

Then on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 10 a.m., it’s time for another Family Steam Lab. Participants will be creating snowball catapults.
