To the editor:
We at Jayland Partners would like to acknowledge the support from our community in 2019 to promote activities.
Our financial support this year included: United Way of Jay County, Alexander Financial Group of Raymond James, Cincinnatus League, Ruth Ann Widman, Portland Foundation, Immaculate Conception CYO, Jay County Friends of the Library, Opportunities for Positive Growth, Watson Excavating, Portland Eagles #928, Jane Ann and Greg Runyon, Val’s Place, Rogers and Janice Durham, Rob and Mindy Weaver, Fisher Packing, Association for Crippled Children/Adults, Dunn Family Dental Care, David and Lena McShane, Bowen Center, Lawrence Family, First Bank of Berne, Bollenbacher and Associates, Williamson, Spencer, and Penrod Funeral Homes, Jay-Randolph Developmental Services, Jay County REMC, Delta Theta Tau (Zeta Chi), FCC, Portland Lions Club, Gamma Nu, Portland Veterinary Clinic, Edward Jones, the office of Drew Houck, Marcy Bodle, Redkey-Delta Theta Tau and Pat Gibson.
Throughout the entire year, we have two social groups known as “Ladies’ Night” and “Man Night.” These groups participate in social and volunteer opportunities. We would like to thank Kris and Kevin Woodbury and Mark Smith for their help with these groups.
In March, Upper Kuts Salon, treated the ladies’ group to a spa night that was a huge hit. Thank you Magan Douglass, Markie LeMaster, Melissa Lugar, Dianna Bost, Stephanie Morgan, Stacy Stammen and Kacey Hunt for giving the ladies such a wonderful treat.
In May, many people from the Jayland area enjoyed special needs prom in Muncie. Thank you Amy VanLue and Dawn Alicea who captured photos at Jay County Courthouse of everyone looking their best. Thanks to Lacey Ninde at The Flower Nook for helping with the corsages and boutonnieres and Mike Leonhard for arranging for us to use the space.
In June, we collaborated with Audrey Muhlenkamp and The Tipsy Glass Winery, Jay Community Center and Jay County Sheriff’s Office for another 5K — Run Now, Wine Later. We enjoyed hosting this 5K at the winery while later enjoying a tailgating atmosphere with food from Dustin Huftel, owner of D’s Grilling and Fire and Brimstone Pizza, and music from George “Erastus” Moore.
This past August, Jayland Partners began the “Next Chapter Book Club.” The purpose of this club is to encourage socialization and the enjoyment of books with one another. This was made possible through support from Cheryl Lucas and Virginia Burkey as volunteers, Jay County Public Library, the Friends of the Library and a grant from The Portland Foundation.
In October, Jayland Partners, JRDS, Meridian Health Services, Portland Police, Jay County Sheriff’s Office, Portland Fire Department and Jay Emergency Medical Services partnered to host our annual Building Bridges Halloween Party, where local law enforcement, first responders and people with special needs enjoyed music, carnival games and the Pizza King pizzas donated by Brian and Jan McGalliard at our annual party. Thank you to the JCHS Drama Club who came out in costume to help serve, paint faces and play games.
In December, Jayland Partners hosted our seventh annual Christmas party. We celebrated a Hawaiian Holiday Christmas with about 250 people with special needs, their families and caregivers. Special thanks to Bryant Wesleyan Church, which was our host location, Jay County High School Best Buddies, Judan Judo, Kendra Harris and all of our volunteers, which are listed below.
