The second half provided opportunity.
There was the opportunity to work on offensive and defensive sets with the sectional tournament right around the corner.
And there was the opportunity to get all three athletes playing for the last time on their home floor into the game at the same time.
Despite a slow start, the Jay County High School girls basketball team built a 15-point lead at the intermission and made the most of the second half in a 53-25 Senior Night victory Saturday over the visiting Southern Wells Raiders.
“We got off to a slow start, but once we got going we got into our half-court trap and were able to turn them over and get some easy baskets,” said JCHS coach Kirk Comer. “We really wanted to get the seniors plenty of playing time tonight. It’s nice to get a win on Senior Night.”
On Sunday, the Patriots came away with the bye as the IHSAA held the sectional tournament draw. They will play in the semifinal around of the Class 3A Sectional 24 tournament at Yorktown at 6 p.m. Feb. 7 against the winner of an opening-round game between No. 8 Winchester and New Castle.
In Saturday’s home finale, Jay County (13-8) trailed briefly in the early going against the Raiders (4-15, 1-5 ACAC). But it took firm control with a 12-0 run in the second quarter.
A 3-pointer from Izzy Rodgers followed by a Renna Schwieterman old-fashioned three-point play less than a minute later keyed the run. The Patriots were up bye 15 at the half and were never challenged over the final 16 minutes despite Georgia Hanauer scoring a game-high 16 points for Southern Wells.
They took advantage of having the game in hand by working first on their zone defense and then opening up the full-court press.
“It’s the first time we’ve pressed, I think, all year,” said Comer, whose team on the offensive end sought to feed the ball into the post. “We’ve been practicing it and the girls wanted to try it tonight. So we did. To be honest, I thought we did OK at it. We’ll continue to work on it and see if it can’t help us during tournament time if we need it.”
JCHS, following a late timeout, also made a point to get seniors Hallie Fields and Macey Weitzel on the court together along with Ghida Emran, an exchange student from Israel who typically is a reserve for the junior varsity squad.
Emran was able to get a couple of shots off and made it onto the stat sheet with an offensive rebound.
Fields was one of four Patriots to reach double figures as she totaled 10 points, seven rebounds and a block in the final home game of her career. Weitzel had two rebounds, one block and one assist.
“It amazes me that you show the leadership that you show,” said Comer of Emran during a post-game ceremony.
He had similar comments about his pair of seniors.
“Hallie is a girl who never complains,” he added. “It’s all about team.
“(Weitzel) has helped these young girls so much. In all my years of coaching, I’ve never had someone that is more about team than she is.
“It’s been an honor to be able to coach you girls, and I wish you nothing but the best.”
Freshman Renna Schwieterman led Jay County with 12 points and four assists. Sophomores Madison Dirksen and Rodgers added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The sectional at Yorktown will open with No. 8 Winchester (19-3) taking on New Castle (3-17) at 7 p.m. Feb. 4.
Other opening-round games will pit Delta (4-14) against Muncie Burris (5-12) at 6 p.m. Feb. 5 with Hamilton Heights (13-10) versus the host Tigers (15-6) to follow.
The semifinal round is slated for Feb. 7, with JCHS playing Winchester or New Castle at 6 p.m. and the Feb. 5 winners to meet each other in the second game.
The championship will be 7:30 p.m. Feb. 8.
