A rural Bryant man died late Wednesday after his buggy was struck by a semi.
Marvin L. Wickey, 21, was pronounced dead early Thursday at IU Health Jay, where he was transported following the 11:45 p.m. Wednesday accident.
Rosa E. Eicher, 19, Bryant, who was a passenger in the buggy, was also severely injured.
According to a Jay County Sheriff’s Office report, Wickey was southbound in a buggy on county road 350 East when he failed to stop before the road’s intersection with Indiana 67. A semi driven by Timothy J. Runner, 63, Rossburg, Ohio, struck the side of Wickey’s buggy. Runner had the right of way on the highway, which had a speed limit of 55 mph
The buggy traveled 57 feet west after it was hit by Runner’s 2017 VST Volvo, which had a trailer attached to it, the report says. Wickey’s body was found by first responders 15 feet from the buggy.
Eicher was transported to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne for severe injuries.
Damage was estimated between $10,000 and $25,000.
