With the Jay County 4-H Fair beginning this weekend, surrounding counties are preparing for their 4-H fairs while abiding by COVID-19 preventative measures.

Masks will be required at the Delaware County 4-H fair, which will run from Monday to July 21. Daily livestock shows will begin Thursday until the end of the fair, highlighted by a horse show July 18.

Wells and Randolph counties’ 4-H fairs will be closed to the public and reserved for its members, exhibitors and immediate family.

“We are not having any outside vendors this year and discouraging extra visitors,” said Sue Thornburg from Randolph County Purdue Extension Office.

Both counties will be streaming events on their YouTube and Facebook pages. Randolph County’s 4-H fair will run from July 17 to July 23 and Wells County’s from Monday to July 23.

Adam County’s 4-H fair will also operate without commercial vendors and run on limited operations because of the ongoing pandemic. Livestock shows will run daily from Saturday to Thursday starting at around 10:30 a.m. at the 4-H park in Monroe. Project exhibits will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Blackford County’s 4-H fair is scheduled to run from Saturday to July 18 at the county’s fairgrounds in Hartford City. The county is still hosting its annual queen contest.

Delaware County Fair Board decided in May to postpone its annual July fair entertainment because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In a press release last week, the board stated it is still working out how to hold a fair this year and that it is postponing its grandstand and midway events, the Delaware County Queen Contest and adult craft show. The board, which is separate from the Delaware County Purdue Extension’s office and local 4-H programs, said it is hoping to reschedule its events in the coming months.

The Indiana State Fair, which is held annually in Indianapolis, was canceled last month because of the pandemic. A summer fun park scheduled to run from July 31 to Sept. 7 at the state fairgrounds was canceled Wednesday.

Purdue Extension restricted face-to-face events until June 30, and gave permission for in-person 4-H fairs beginning July 1 providing they abide by state and local health guidelines.
