A Ridgeville woman died Thursday after she was involved in a head-on vehicle collision on U.S. 27.
Nancy E. Sarff, 57, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident about 6:30 a.m. Thursday.
Sarff was driving north on U.S. 27 between county roads 400 South and 300 South Thursday morning while Michael D. Newman, 57, Union City, was driving south. According to a Jay County Sheriff’s Office accident report, Newman’s 2000 Oldsmobile Bravada drifted into the northbound lane, where it struck Sarff’s 2008 Chevy Impala.
The driver’s sides of the vehicles struck each other. The Impala went off the east side of the road and into a ditch. The Bravada came to a rest on the opposite side of the highway.
Newman was trapped in the car until emergency services was able to free him. His leg was fractured as a result of the accident and he was transported to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
The accident caused traffic to be closed for about an hour and a half.
Damage to the vehicles was estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.
