Counterman files for commissioner
Independent Bruce Counterman will run against Brian McGalliard for south commissioner seat
There will be a contested race for commissioner on the ballot this fall.
Bruce Counterman of Jefferson Township filed as an independent Tuesday to run for Jay County Commissioner in the south district. He will take on Republican Brian McGalliard in the November general election.
Counterman became the first local candidate to file since the June 2 primary election, which was delayed by a month because of the coronavirus pandemic.
He will take on McGalliard, a Dunkirk resident who won a three-way Republican primary. McGalliard earned 45 percent of the vote, ahead of Duane Monroe (37 percent) and Barb Street (18 percent).
Incumbent Republican Chuck Huffman chose not to seek re-election.
Prior to Counterman’s filing, the only local contested race in the general election was for Jay County Council. Five candidates — Republicans Matt Minnich, Jeanne Houchins and Ray Newton, and Democrats Judy Aker and Josh Gibson — are vying for three at-large seats.
Rex Journay, who won the Republican primary for north district commissioner, is currently unopposed. Others unopposed for the general election are Republican incumbents Jon Eads for Jay Circuit Court clerk, Michael Brewster for coroner, Brad Daniels for surveyor and Paula Miller for treasurer, and Republican Gail Dues for Jay Superior Court Judge.
The deadline for candidates to file to fill a vacancy on the general election ballot is noon Tuesday. The Democratic and Republican parties then have until July 6 to fill any remaining vacancies.
Election Day is November 3.
