Help make legendary status official

To the editor:

I always told my friend, the late Darrel “Pete” Brewster, “I am the president of your Portland fan club.” This would get a big smile from Pete.

I have recently been informed that the Cleveland Browns have their own Hall of Fame called the Cleveland Browns Legends. Upon investigation, I found that Pete has never been inducted to the Cleveland Browns Legends.

If you review some of his statistics, you, like me, will wonder why Pete has not been inducted. Playing for the Browns from 1952 to 1958, he played on five Browns division championship teams, including the 1954 and 1955 world championship teams. Pete led the teams in receptions and receiving yards in 1955 (34/622), 1956 (28/417) and 1957 (30/614) and led the NFL in 1957 with an average of 20.5 yards per reception.

Now, locally we know what Pete’s accomplishments were with the famous Three Bs, Bond, Brewster and Bright. We also know Pete was enshrined into the Purdue University Athletic Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in basketball and football.

So, you are asking, why am I writing this letter to the editor when you are aware of the above information?

I have been given the names and addresses of 10 people who control the Cleveland Browns Legends by Ed Caster. We are seeking other friends of Pete Brewster who would write to these people in order to get Pete inducted into the Cleveland Browns Legends. Perhaps we need to include not only a few Browns statistics, but stories of what a great person Pete has been to many of us. Stories such as Doug Milligan’s tale of Pete coming to Portland and practicing with the 1956 Portland High School football team.

We all know our friend Pete is a legend to us. Let’s make it official.
