Adding a course?

Every year, golf aficionados begin the spring by engulfing themselves in the Masters at Augusta National Golf Course.

Portland could soon have its own course to welcome spring into the new year, but instead of park goers sinking 90-foot putts and raising their fist in the air like Tiger Woods, they could be throwing Frisbees into baskets.

No, it’s not your grandpa’s favorite pastime, it’s Frisbee golf, and Matt Shauver of Portland Street and Parks Department wants to see some of the little used land in the city’s parks converted into a Frisbee golf course.

Shauver told Portland Park Board at its meeting Tuesday he will soon be ready to present a comprehensive plan of what it will take to make an 18-hole/basket course at Hudson and Weiler-Wilson parks.

About $14,000 has already been pledged by local businesses to support the course, which would only require a little bit of concrete work and pole installation, he said.

Frisbee golf is exactly what it sounds like — players throw a frisbee into a basket sustained several feet in the air by a pole that resembles the same poles used at golf courses to designate a hole.

Shauver said the sport is popular in Winchester and that there are potentially acres of land that have no planned future use and that “nobody touches” during the summer that could be utilized to create an 18-hole course.

The topic has been tabled by the board in the past, he said, but with it being cost-effective and only requiring parks department labor, he doesn’t see why it can’t happen sooner rather than later.

“It’s a neat thing. I don’t know why we don’t have it,” said Shauver, who plans on introducing specific financial requirements to the board at its next meeting.

In other business, park board members Chris Compton, Giles Laux, Brian Ison and Shauna Runkle:

•Learned from Shauver that quotes have been gathered for crack seal maintenance on the outer trail to Hudson Family Park. J.G. Excavating & Asphalt Paving out of Huntington gave the lowest quote of $5,500. They did not vote on awarding a contract.

•Voted to raise the starting wage for lifeguards at Portland Waterpark from $8 to $9 an hour.

•Heard from Shauver eight pole lights at Hudson Family Park will be converted to LED bulbs to save money.
