Day one put them among the top 10 Cardinals.

On the second day, they swam to the front.

Jay County High School graduates Alex Bader and Anne Vormohr made up half of a school-record effort in the 200-yard freestyle relay for the Ball State University women’s swim team in the Mid-American Conference Championships at State University of New York at Buffalo.

Bader, a 2018 JCHS graduate, swam the third leg of the relay in 23.52 seconds, and Vormohr, her cousin and a 2016 graduate, anchored with her split of 23.47 seconds.

Together with Apsara Sakbun and Peighton Gilbert, the Cardinal quartet had a time of 1 minute, 32.88 seconds, to set a new school record. It was the second consecutive year the Cardinals’ 200 freestyle relay broke the school mark.

They finished fourth in the event.

Bader took fifth place in the 100 breaststroke with her time of 1:02.88, an improvement of three spots from the preliminaries. She was also 11th in the 200 breaststroke, 23rd in the 50 freestyle and handled the breaststroke leg of the 400 medley relay team that was eighth.

In the final meet of her swim career, Vormohr improved one spot from her preliminary seed as she finished 15th in the 100 backstroke. She was also 18th in the 50 freestyle and 19th in the 200 backstroke. Vormohr anchored the eighth-place 400 freestyle relay team as well.
